ISRC relevant to MP3 ?

Post by littlejohn » Fri Aug 21, 2009 12:38 pm

Greetings all !Are ISRC codes relevant to MP3 ? I know we typically associate them with CD's. The pure definition ( according to isrc.org ) would suggest they identify "sound recordings" so I have to ask. If so, how do you affix the code to MP3 ?If not, then what identification is routinely used to identify the sound recording carried inside the MP3 file ?Do I have all my murds wixed up ? TIA for the chat ! Best -- John

hey John:I'm no expert on this subject. What I do know is that my distributor (Tunecore) assigned me an ISRC and a UPC code when I released single songs. Every download should have the ISRC identification provided with the mp3 and probably can be verified if you go to the mp3's properties in windows/mac. Hope this helps.

What Simon said.If you go through tunecore, cd baby, nimbit etc. They will attach the isrc code to your mp3 files and distribute those encoded mp3's to itunes, amazon etc. There is no extra charge for this, but very useful when selling mp3's online. For CD's the isrc codes are embedded at the mastering stage and are only good for those files. When mp3's are made from the 16 bit files off the cd the code does not transfer onto the mp3.
