Just trying to figure out my equipment - Feedback

Post by cyagi » Mon May 12, 2008 6:49 pm

I had another thread I posted a several weeks back regarding whether it is possible to get a good sound out of minimal equipment. I appreciate all the feedback I received. I have been experimenting with my gear and think I have a decent sound. Definitely no where near the quality that I got out of a professional studio, but I am hoping I am going in the right direction. I was wondering if someone might have a listen to what I have recorded and advise on what my recording can use. I really did minimal mixing and was working mostly on mic placement. Here is the link: http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... trueThanks!

What I heard sounded clear and well performed but a little dry. A little reverb on the voice and putting the guitar in stereo would fatten up the sound. If you're not going to add bass or drums you could probably add a little low end to the guitar sound. If you plan to add bass or drums then the guitar sound that you've got should sit very nicely in the mix.

Well - are you recording with a computer or with dedicated hardware? If in a computer, I'd say:1. Get a high quality reverb - like a convolution reverb.Reverb is not just for 'putting on reverb' - it's more about shaping the sound, and fast echos - early reflections - feels to the mind like an integrated part of the sound, not like an add-on.2. Get a de-esser, to ease down those sibilants. The last advice holds even if you're not using a computer:3. Sing closer to the mic. Well, these were the most obvious things here, in my view.- until next time.frodo

When I clicked on your link, the quality from the Taxi stream was set to "lo". On the el-cheapo computer speakers I have, the conversion artifacts were very noticeable...can you switch your link to the "hi" quality setting? I'm no expert at sound, btw...the low quality stream thing was something thatI had to figure out too.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have a very low budget cubase le system with a tascam interface to my PC. I use a MXL990 condenser mic as well as a Sennheiser e935. I basically used both mics at the same time to see what it would sound like and ended up panning one left and one right. In terms of lo vs high quality for my Taxi stream, I just checked and it looks like it is set to high. I think you do this under "My Music" when I log in. Is there somewhere else I need to do this?
