Yeah, tell me about it. I waited for TWO years for them to update the mac pro, and when they finally did it this past summer, it was basically a slap in the face. It really wasn't an update at all to be honest. So I just bought a 2010 refurb and put the money I saved into buying a bunch of RAM and extra hard drives.

I really hope that the next update is a real update, and that they don't turn it into some stupid slim case compact computer that you can't get into and upgrade/expand. Apple is basically a toy company these days.

I think a refurb is a good way to go in some ways. OWC - macsales.com also does processor upgrades if it gets to the point where you don't have enough jam.

Apple certainly makes toys, and I drank the kool-aid. I got em. Nnot all of them, but I honstly think OSX is better than windows for me.

I still hope they will make newer machines with mac pro features. however, at this point, getting a top of the range iMac with a Magma 3 space PCI chassis via thunderbolt really changes the game on what an iMac or MacbookPro can do. It allows a macbook pro to run Protools HD-X, a UAD-2 Octo card, and a OWC pci SSD drive (up to 960 GB) simultaneously. That is pretty amazing I think. Doing that 5 years ago needed a Mac Pro and a Magma PCI expansion chassis, and Protools HD3 etc. totally different ball game. not saying I have the cash to buy this now (or maybe wouldn't ever do it) - but things are changing. there are a lot of other ways to get to the same place. and maybe they don't included a big desktop computer anymore.

there are always Hackintosh PC's out there too. very powerful some of them.

In some ways, maybe Apple is actually doing something right holding on before releasing a new mac pro model (assuming they still will). Times are a changing very quickly. We haven't really seen the thunderbolt market saturate and stabilize.

my caffeine fueled just back from the ski hill opinion.

Well, of course Mac Pro is Apples high end machine, but I really don't agree with the statement regarding MacBook Pro.

I have a quad 2.2 core MacBook Pro early 2011 with 16 gig of ram and 2 SSD 512 gig disks.

I can run pretty much anything on this machine (I mainly work with software).
I can add a lot of channels, I have not so far experienced any problems.

Giving you an example of the programs I use on this machine:

Logic 9
Omnisphere
Trilian
8Dio adagio Violins
Cinematic Strings
Komplete 8
Everything done by the Swedish company Toontrack
Vienna SE
Cineorch
Cinebrass
Drums of War
Drums of War 2
Cinecrach
Cinetoms

... just to mention a few software programs on this machine..

Not sure if I caught the exact version of Logic Pro 9 that you're using. - Click in the About Logic area to get the long Logic build version. Could you add that or point it out to me? Also what exact OS version (may have been posted but I didn't see it as I looked through).

Hey Rich I'm now running in 64 bit ! thanks. I'll see about the other suggestions ....

Does anyone know has my machine been LIMITED ...at the design stage /circuitry ...to run only 5 Gb RAM ? or can I buy and install as much as I want :?: .
( I installed an extra 3 Gb myself just a short few months ago ...I enjoyed the job ...made me feel less of a  .)

If the design limits me what do I do then?...other than buy a new machine?
(or possibly.... consider a few weeks work as an overweight middle aged male escort in a stauchley Catholic sexually repressed country...a bank heist? ).

....scratch that one guys !.... get back to your....READING THE LISTINGS CAREFULLY...LISTENING TO THE REFERENCED ARTISTS ...WRITING... PITCHING AND FORGETTING...

cos i just discovered GOOGLE !! 8-)

Hey Lucis,

Glad to hear this.
Bouncing is very simple to do.
If you find your happy with your midi and plugin track and your not tampering with it anymore. Bounce your track to an audio file
and you will free up your cpu. When you bounce, Logic will ask you if you want to replace the track or create a new one. I just replace it.
You can always " save as " your project to start a new mix and bounce if your worried about losing all the plugin/ midi channels.
You can also save your original track to a file to recall for tweaking later on.
The logic tutorials / help section will help with that.
I do it all the time and I don't have those problems anymore.

Rich

And as an alternative to bouncing your instrument tracks you could freeze them to free up CPU. When I need to I'll freeze tracks while still working on a production and when I'm finished I'll bounce them for archival purposes.

Hello,

sometimes I export as an audio file. This works for somethings but I bounce tracks a lot. I believe there's a ctl click drop down menu that has in in there. As far as the folders if you don't seem any folders in the arrange then you don't have them unless they are on a hidden track.

I agree: I think the new Macbook Pro isn't as good as I hoped. They say they don't want to make a 17" because with the retina display you don't need the real estate. While working with a lot of plugins it doesn't help if the plugins are unable to rescale. The other's are; no PCi card for the UAD and no built in superdrive, unless it's not a retina display. However, Thunderbolt options do exist.

I have a really old Macbook Pro the original so I've always had those processing messages. One thing, I don't know if it was already given in the post, which I like to avoid repeating, is the fact that when using Komplete Plugins, you can mute the instrument by option clicking the plugin slot on the channel strip to get the processing power back. You can bounce down the track and even leave the region in the project. However, I am not saying that's recommended. I've noticed the Komplete Plugins do take a lot of processing power. Also, if you use a UAD check the box in the preferences that asked if you want to release the processing upon muting the plugin.

I use Logic 8 and I always have disk space problems. It's always best to have at least a few giga bytes free. I don't know how hard in Logic 9 it is to clean up the harddrive but in Logic 8 always want to work from the audio file bin in the project. I've found that deleting and moving files and folders in the finder can really cause the project not to find the audio files. I should hope that no one else has that problem but in spite of the embarrassment I want to tell that just to make sure. What that said; I have lost instrument settings by not saving them so while the project always opens if you ever have to move the contents of your hard drive to another drive they don't copy. http://forums.taxi.com/posting.php?mode ... 3&t=100235# That may not be true but it's my experience.

I hope I didn't repeat anything said by someone in this post.
