Logic Pro Users-

Post by bmete » Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:08 pm

Hi,I'm turning off the old Korg1600, and getting ready to buy:The Mac Pro-additional 1 Gig RAM,additional hard drive-Logic Pro.Fire PodUp until going to the Rally I was planning to do the Pro tool thing. I talked with the Apple rep after their presentation and he was very convincing. Went to the Apple store and talked with an Apple " Audio Creative". Equally as impressed. But, the real proof in the pudding is you all. I would appreciate your comments. (Also for the record, what interested me most, is one of the writers I work with is 300 miles away. We were figuring on him using an mac notebook with logic express for his parts, and then I could load them to my system for mixing, etc.)Look forward to hearing from you! Thanks! Bob my question is who is using the Pro Logic, do you like it,

http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... 0744511Hey Bob, I am about to make the transition from a Korg D1200 to Logic. When I initially considered the change I started the above thread and got some good input, check it out. I'm trying the same long distance collaboration with my former guitarist, gotta love digital. Good luck, hope this helps... Geo

I use both. But, I've done that for many years. I find I'm faster doing track production, idea sketching, in depth MIDI programming in Logic. And I'm WAY faster editing and fixing audio, and building a mix in ProTools. That said, both programs have come a long way in the last few years... MIDI in PT is better than it used to be, and audio in Logic is much better too. Now, I've got a ProTools HD3 Accel set up, so processing for mixing is not an issue, but that's become true of a powerful native set up too. If I were starting from scratch, and didn't need the compatibility that PT offers with every major studio in the world, I'd probably go with a powerful Mac Pro and Logic. I think the interfaces have come far enough that tracking with them will work fine, (though I'm not sure you can get away with tracking through plug-ins like I do with ProTools all the time), and the processing for mixing and plug-ins that are available for AU make mixing in Logic doable. To me the routing and bussing in Logic is a lot less intuative than ProTools, which is feels a lot more like bussing on an analog console. But again, it's TONS better than it used to be. What are you going to be doing? Mostly live tracking? Mostly MIDI production? Mostly editing/mixing?

I've been using Logic about 7 or 8 years and I've always thought it's a cool program along with Performer and Sonar etc... but I have to say since the last update I'm now really loving it. It's much more intuitive than it used to be and a really cool side effect for me is how much it ties into Garage Band. I've been using GB for a sketch pad on my laptop for a while but now that I'm using Logic 8, I find GB much more intuitive and opening GB files in Logic works better than it used to. I really think they've nailed it with this one, plus I'm really looking forward to using Mainstage once I upgrade my laptop, and the inclusion of Waveburner and Soundtrack for free makes it a pretty amazing package.

I think you will find people either on one side of the fence or the other. That said I would have to say that Stick did a pretty good job of straddelingthat fence. I started with Pro Tools but soon became disenchanted with DigidesignsDrivers for the mac. I got Logic Pro and was blown away by the value. With the recent price drop of 50% it really is a no brainer. Apple is going to keep makingLogic better and I tbink this upgrade is a sign of great things to come for the program. If someone thinks Pro Tools is better "for them" I say great. Some people will argue tillthey are blue in the face that one program is better than the other. It is the personrunning it that makes the real difference. I have chosen Logic and I am very happy with that choice. You have to choose the one you think is best for you.

I think Stick's right: you need to ask yourself what you are mostly going to be doing. I don't know much about Logic or Pro Tools but as a self-contained composer who does a ton of MIDI work, if I were starting out fresh, I'd go with Logic or something comparable (I've been on Digital Performer for years). If I was opening a studio for recording/mixing/producing for outside clients and doing mostly audio work, then Pro Tools would be a no-brainer.Good luck,Mazz

I have both Logic Pro and Protools. Logic Pro is a little more in depth to learn but for me (I work by myself or with 1 other musician) combining live and software instrument tracks, Logic Pro is definitely the way to go. To be fair, PT is easier to pick up and better for tracking all live, but I actually like Cubase even better for that. I had to learn PT because of mixing some stuff for other people (GEO - I HAVEN"T FORGOTTEN!)BTW - I'm running Logic Studio now - its worth the upgrade - on a Mac Pro running tiger, it has a 1.8 dual core with only 1g of ram (comes with it). Works fine, but occasionally locks up with my M-Audio Projectmix if I breath wrong (not a mac problem but an M-audio / firewire problem). If you can swing the extra gig of ram, do it, but if you can't then rest assured the rig will be very good. Also, go to the Logic support area and read about the nodes setup in the new Logic Pro - it will make everything (supposedly) very easy for collaborating.

I can't thank you all enough.... I was having pre- cognitive dissonance about the purchase, but you all helped me feel really good about purchasing the system. I will be using it to record live sax, piano, drums, and midi then interfacing with a co-writer who does guitar and bass. He is already on a mac so it seems logical to go this route. We plan to up load the files to dot mac (.mac), and then I'll do the final mix, (he has logic express). Thanks again for the links and sharing your personal experiences ...I'm sure I'll be back asking questions like ( how do you turn this ***#** on). Bob

I'm a convert from Digital Performer to Logic Pro!For years (since the early '90's) I've been a Performer guy, but lately, I just don't boot it up anymore. It's a great program, but I find that I like Logic more now. For me, the way I work, it's just faster, and it has better built-in sounds (although I do have a decent library of 3rd Party Audio Unit sounds that also work with DP).Since I don't do much in the way of live tracking anymore, I don't use ProTools anymore, and I have to say I don't really miss it. I think if/when I start doing more live tracking, I'll definitely get back into ProTools, but until then, the Logic Pro sequencer engine rocks.BTW, I upgraded to Logic Pro 8 soon after it came out, and I've really liked it. There are several new improvements that have made my life easier.

Bob:Here my two cents...I used Pro Tools Digi systems back in my PC days. I'll argue with anyone that's it's a great program, and fairly intuitive. When I switched to a Mac, I stayed with Pro Tools, but later switched to Logic. There were a few reasons for this...Logic offered a lot more in the way of effects, virtual instruments, etc. Secondly, I didn't like the idea of having to lug around my Digi hardware whenever I wanted to do some "coffee-shop" mixing. Not sure if that's changed or not, but you needed the hardware plugged in to run the PTLE software. Now that I have been with Logic, I would never go back. Keep in mind, however, that's what works for me. I'm not saying that's what's best for you. In any event, you won't be sorry you went the Logic route. Further, watch for Apple to enter the hardware arena in the near future. They're not going to let all the other manufacturers profit on hardware options for their software forever. Maybe they'll buy MOTU or a similar company; who knows?Blessings,Craig
