Looking for words

Hi, all

I just joined Taxi yesterday, although I've been hanging around the Peer-to-Peer forum for some months. Feel free to listen to my stuff – I write in several genres. SounsCloud has the most songs on it at the moment.

I am realising that I'm the kind of songmaker who works best with limitations. And I run out of words often, too. So in the spirit of collaboration, I'd like to try building songs around other people's lyrics, to see if it works for me (and you too, hopefully). Anyone interested in taking a punt and send me some words to work with?

I think your vocals sounds awesome, very appealing and smooth with nice air! Maybe I can send you something. I have a bunch of lyrics lying around, that I never use. I do write better to music, though, when there's a specific project ahead, but maybe something can be a starting point for eeh.. something

How do you produce the tracks for your music?

Hey, Magne, thanks for getting back.

I've been out of the musical loop for too many years and I really have very limited knowledge of production techniques, but am learning and trying new stuff every day. I run Logic Pro on a Mac Pro and work mostly in MIDI. I really need to invest in some new VI's, but that will have to wait a while, I'm afraid. I have a halfway decent condenser mic – a JTS JS-1 - which is spectacularly unimpressive, and I often get a better result from a beaten up old Behringer XM8500 I bought second hand from a rehearsal studio. I can never get that up-close intimate thing, though, which I would love to achieve. I need to get a pre-amp, I think, to get the extra volume without the noise. Then I usually go for a tight sample delay first before the reverb (all in-the-box) and obviously EQ different pitches accordingly.

I'm with you on the writing for music thing. Words in isolation are not my forte, but I thought I might find some lyric writers here who maybe aren't strong on arranging who might be willing to take a punt. It's something we've been doing on my degree course – swapping lyrics and starter tracks with each other – and it really helps me to think outside my own box, if you know what I mean. If you wanna send me some words, I'd be happy to take a shot. No pressure, though.

Sounds fine with me, Nick. From what I've heard from you, you are serious about both music and production. We all have to make the best of what we can get. I'm just going to look through my shelves and find something for you. What kind of music do you listen to the most? (what's closest to your heart?).. and is that the same music you want to be doing, thinkng ahead?

In my heart, soul, funk, latin and reggae. But I have a shot at rock and singer-songwriter stuff too. I just thought it might be interesting to be given some raw material with no brief and see what happens. Are you prepared to let some words go with no instruction and see what comes back? Could be fun, could be worthless, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? When you get something, PM me so I can an email prompt. I'm looking forward to this...
