Lyrics - Can they be simple?
Usually, I write songs chock-full of metaphors, descriptions, visions, etc. My new song is a really, really simple, cute love song and is extremely straight-forward. In order to make a song a "great" song, is this a no-no? When I play the song live, the audience always gives me great compliments about it because they can relate, but I always feel like it's my most immature or cookie-cutter song. What do you think?

Thanks for the welcome ! I'm excited to jump on the TAXI bandwagon once I find $300 lying around somewhere I'm glad to hear your opinion - that makes me feel better. I'm not a huge Bright Eyes fan, but I do listen to him every once in a while and his lyrics rarely mean what they say... I always feel so inadequate after listening to him

Buddy....the only songs for me that are somewhat commercial are cookie cutter songs...anything I know came from the heart and have any REAL emotion usually have to be rewritten to make commercial(at least structure-wise)...from my expierences, its the music business...not the "here's my emotional song from the heart which totally means something to me" business....and remember...its a product,so don't get too attatched.

Re: Lyrics - Can they be simple?
I think it is more DIFFICULT to write SIMPLE.Simple isn't cliches or small words or dumb...it is simply the right word in the right place. And it's harder than the devil to write. If you wrote one, be happy. It's EASY to get all complex and overly impressive. Writing simply is HARD.

Re: Lyrics - Can they be simple?
Hmmm... interesting take. You're right, in a way - I guess to write a simple song that WORKS is difficult (look at a million Beatles songs). But if I were to write a song that is justI love some girlShe makes me smileShe is my worldI'd walk for miles...blah blah blahthat would quickly get annoying. I THINK I wrote a "good" simple song. I posted this already in the "Lyric Lovers" section - not meaning to spam or anything, but I might as well through my link up again. I'm looking at The Midnight Romancer here... is this decent? It still seems... I don't know... like it's missing something, lyrically. Suggestions? http://www.sonicbids.com/BuddyTaccolini(the "New Version" one is a little easier to hear)
