Mast in the MistHe walked along the shoreline, as day sank into nightSaw an old jug of white rum, wash up with the tideClimbed the steps to the lighthouse, on that Carolina cliffThought he’d drink some, of that sweet rum to help pass his shiftClocks struck the witching hour, as he gazed on Skeleton RockHe dropped his jug, fear chilled his blood at what slipped from the fogA ship with three silver sails, that starlight bent to kissColonial flag-a-wavin’, from a mast in the mistWell, he pointed his spotlight, toward a rock shaped like a skullBut not before its stony teeth, bit through that old wooden hullTwo lifeboats hit the water, crew and captain were all savedBut light from the moon, shone on the tomb that chained three hundred slavesThough the captain’s laundress, had eyes a violet blueThere was no space, for her dark face among his scurvy crewPulled by foamy fingers, down to a salty abyssShe went there clinging to, a mast in the mistWell, he woke up at sunrise, cast that jug into the seasHe thought of slaves, in briny graves and wept upon his kneesO that ship had stopped in Haiti, to trade for rum and fursWhen it left port, it had aboard a blessing of a curseTo those horsewhipped slaves, death became a giftWhen one and all rose again, unlike the mast in the mistNow there’s a lighthouse keeper, walking some New England shoreWhere a jug of mystic rum, washes up once more…©2007 Robert George
