I wonder if going from the usual environment of midi/computer-based music to a well-recorded session with real instruments and musicians felt like a revelation, an experience of awe as if awakening out of darkness into the light. I remember I had that experience many years ago when I helped out on a recording session with Charlie Haden, Fred Myrow (piano) and a S. American accordionist. The difference in sound and energy between my usual world of midi/synth music and this live session really knocked me off my feet. It's something I'll never forget.

Did your session provide a similar experience for you guys?

Richard,

It's always so much fun to play jazz with players who really know how to play it. Listening back to the rough mixes completely validates all you said in your post. There's nothing like great players, great instruments, great mics/room/ears with real air moving! It will never be replaced. As good as samples get, there's always "one step removed", IMO. There's nothing like touching a Yamaha 7 foot grand and playing some swinging stuff. Nothing!

Thanks for your post!

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!
