Memphis

Hi - new here but wanted to stop by. Haven't been a member long but hope to rectify that in the coming weeks.Anyhow, I suppose I am more of a songwriter than performing, and I wrote a song about a trip to Memphis I took three to four years ago. A few people on You Tube have said they like it so I was wondering what you guys thought. If you visit www.youtube.com/shawncullen and click through my videos, Memphis is there. Here are the lyrics and comments on these would be most welcome!I flew in over the wide and muddy riverSinking below the Mississippi sunA warm and hazy early evening met meAs I touched down in MemphisFrom the hotel I strolled on down to Main StreetThe trolley's were running by my sideI saw the Peabody but the ducks, well they were sleepingAnd on Beale Street the neon lights hit my eyesAnd I heard singing coming out of that streetI heard laughter, and historyI heard footsteps of those who'd been there beforeAnd I saw faces, that I'd like to meet[at work and I've forgotten this line!!]And I wondered into the Rum Boogie CafeAnd I grabbed a beer and had myself some ribsAnd I listened as the band began to playNext day I found myself on a riverThe Memphis Queen she took me for a rideThen I took a drive and drove on down to GracelandAnd I wondered if this man really diedAnd I heard singing coming out of that houseI heard laughter, and miseryAnd I heard footsteps of those who'd been there beforeAnd I saw tombstones, of a familyI flew out over the wide and sprawling cityFlying high above the Tennessee sunI saw Memphis, disappear behind meA place that touched me, and then some...And I heard singing coming out of that streetI heard laughter, and historyI heard footsteps of those who'd been there beforeAnd I saw faces, that I'd like to meetThanks alot!!Shawn

Your voice reminds me a lot of James Taylor! At this part (I think it's the chorus):"And I heard singing coming out of that streetI heard laughter, and historyI heard footsteps of those who'd been there beforeAnd I saw faces, that I'd like to meet"I would throw a little different melody in the third line. The melody sounds great, it just gets monotonous when sang 4 times in a row. Even if just the word "footsteps" was higher and punchier, I think that'd really liven things up. My two cents... take it or leave it . I liked the song overall, though, really. I definitely see this in a movie with some sad guy driving across some barren land... I don't know why I see that.
