Re: Mic for recording acoustic guitar - recommends?
I've had several of my studio buddies tell me a small cap condenser mic is one way to do it. I think there's no one "right way" in recording. For example, the Rode NT5.
What mics do you currently have in your collection?

For $84, I think I would try one of those Gauge mics Rob Chiarelli sells. ECM-84 It's probably modeled after the Neumann KM-84, I believe they're KM 184 now and $850.

The smaller diaphragm will give you faster transients.

So do you feel confident enough to recommend the matched stereo pair for $184? I don't have one, I'm just sayin' for the money I would gamble, probably even for the matched pair, I mean stereo!cardell wrote:That's what I use too. Based on what I've heard with my ECM-87 I would say yes!Len911 wrote:So do you feel confident enough to recommend the matched stereo pair for $184? I don't have one, I'm just sayin' for the money I would gamble, probably even for the matched pair, I mean stereo!![]()
However, what I'm interested in doing now (with acoustic guitar recordings) is some mid-side micing with my ECM-87 and a reasonably good figure 8 mic (for stereo recordings). I'm loving the deep, full tone I'm getting (even with the built-in high-pass filter turned on) when I use the ECM-87 on both vocals & acoustic guitars. Here's a vocal I did with it : https://soundcloud.com/cardell/god-is-g ... t-you-down
I've also got my eye on an ECM-47 from Gauge.

Not sure on your budget, but if you're looking for a mic that sounds great on acoustic, and reliable in lots of other avenues, RODE NT2 has been nothing but fantastic to me.

Re: Mic for recording acoustic guitar - recommends?
I picked up a stereo pair of the Gauge small diaphragm mics at the Road Rally. I haven't mic'd an acoustic guitar with them but I have recorded my accordion and some hand percussion and am very pleased with the results. For the price, I think you will find them to come in handy. I think that they sound much better than their price would indicated and certainly approach the Neuman which for one mic costs at least 3 times as much. The Neuman certainly doesn't sound 500.00 better!! That's just my 2c
Plus the Gauge mics came with a set of omni capsules. I'm not sure if that's what they normally come with or if it was a Road Rally special. It would be worth mentioning that you are a Taxi member when contacting them.
Of course, with acoustic guitar, the room is at least as important as the mics. A wood floor is a nice thing to have when recording acoustic guitars, that and a little but not too much bounce from the walls.
