Thanks for the suggestions, though I can see my budget flying out the window!

Anyone have opinions on the Neumann KM184 or the AKG C414 series? How would either of those compare to the ones under discussion here?

The neumanns are a small diaphragm condensor, and the akg 414 is a large diaphragm condensor with a presence bump. As far as go-to brand named mics, anything Neumann, Telefunken or AKG(though I can think of a couple clunkers), and the other boutique mics on an individual basis. As far as ribbons, Chinese aren't bad but that's probably because of the design of ribbons. I've never used a chinese condensor mic, but it's been said that they can clone the 67 capsule, but they can't handle the hf in the amplifier circuit like a neumann or telefunken. So probably 90% might sound just like a neumann, but it's the 10% ouch zone? It's probably like having a Mercedes with a Yugo transmission, which is fine if everything is flat and downhill.
