Thanks Cosmic Dolphin, but that blog doesn't say anything about Music Licensing Companies- only Libraries and Publishers....
this shall remain an ongoing investigation ( cue the Music!)

I guess the best way for you to understand is to start licensing your music and gain some real world experience. I can send you a list of companies to work with.
