My computer started smoking

Post by Casey H » Sat Jun 06, 2009 5:09 pm

OK, lots of smoking jokes will surely follow!Today I went to launch Cubase, I got a Windows blue screen of death and smoke came out of my PC with an obvious burning smell. I shut it off and assumed all was lost-- surely something burned up. Well, it re-booted and runs fine. Nothing seems damaged-- memory, all disk drives, audio card, etc all OK.The only thing I can assume is that my power supply was damaged but it still puts out power (maybe not well regulated) to run the PC. I have to also assume it was unrelated to Cubase, since software (even though Cubase crashes on me a lot) usually can't make smoke come out of your PC- that only happens in science fiction movies when you ask the computer tough questions.I ordered a new power supply and won't use the PC until I replace it. It was a scary moment... Nothing like seeing your PC appear to go up in flames... I kept thinking "When did I last backup?". I also immediately backed up everything... Casey

It's a rare story that's funny and scary at the same time. Glad everything (knock on wood) seems to have worked out.

CaseyI clean my power supply and fan often.Sometimes you can smell them getting warm and act in time.If you smelled smoke, You most likely burned a winding or two.Very easy to switch out.good luckPaul
