Need advice for MIDI drum triggers
Today I recorded some live drums for a hip hop blues listing (weird listing description), and I added some drum samples over the live kit. It didn't take too long to manually add the sample tracks, but it would have taken far less time if I had MIDI drum triggers.
Is anyone here capturing MIDI data from live drums? There are lots of triggers and options out there, I don't even know where to start. I just need three triggers to capture my kick, snare and hi-hat. Any gear recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need advice for MIDI drum triggers
There's drum triggers and then there's drum replacement software.
The midi drum triggers use sensors that hook up to analog drums and convert to midi.
Drum replacement software uses the audio from a drum recording, to trigger replacement drum audio samples.

Re: Need advice for MIDI drum triggers
The drummers I know that do it all seem to have those electronic drum kits and then they trigger a drum sample packagage like BFD or something.
If you want to use triggers from an acoustic drum kit you can actually make your own pretty cheap.

How did you get on with the listing, I think I submitted to the same one... https://soundcloud.com/cosmicdolphin/hi ... es/s-Ypgfq

Here's what I ended up with:
https://soundcloud.com/paulcroteau/rockin-man-go
I don't hear any hip hop in the a la's or my track, but I copied the style best I could. I tried that AABA format in the listing but it wasn't long enough at this tempo so I added another A plus an extension.

Yeah... that Addictive Trigger looks really nice. $179 is the cost of a couple of decent triggers, I may go that route. Thanks for the link, I had no idea this existed!

Slate and Drumagog are the major players in that arena; (XLN's offering has some cool tricks up its sleeve, too; check it out) I use an Alesis pads kit and brain to trigger Addictive Drums, but if you didn't have triggers on acoustic drums (probably provides the best feel, if you're a 'real drummer') you can just use close mics and detection software to generate your MIDI notes. I plan to add this to my hybrid kit, in the near future: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CEDTS It needs to be plugged into a drum brain to generate MIDI notes and also requires a custom cable, at least in my case. You could use those little "red dot" piezo triggers, but they won't stand up to a stray drum hit and using adhesives damps the drum a bit.

Paulie
Logic had a drum replacement feature that works well enough and has a lot of samples included. And naturally once it's MIDI you can trigger any drum VI
No need to buy anything.

Andy, I was thinking that also, however, andygabrys wrote:Paulie

Most daws have an audio-to-midi type of program. The pitch doesn't matter. The length doesn't matter either, just the attack. If it's a kick it goes on C1 or whatever note your drum vsti uses. Same with all the other parts of the kit. If all the kit pieces are recorded on one track, you would need to listen as you move the notes. If you are lucky enough that it sees all the kick drum notes a certain pitch, you would then move all of that pitch to whatever note your kick needed to be on.It didn't take too long to manually add the sample tracks, but it would have taken far less time

Well one of the reference songs didn't even have a hip hop beat under it, that was left to our imaginationPaulie wrote:Here's what I ended up with:

Your track reminded me of Joan Jett etc....more straight up rock, I miss the "roomy distorted hip hop drums" that the listing asked for. Good luck with it though.
Ours was a song originally that I removed the vox from, edited down to a shorter form and programmed a drum machine underneath with tons of distortion. It felt bad distorting it so much ! I was going for the "Jungle" X Ambassadors" feel for the drums.

Re: Need advice for MIDI drum triggers
yes true, but once you have used a dedicated drum sample replacer (sound replacer, drumagog, Massey DRT etc.) you see that its so EASY with these things, whereas other methods, sure you can do them, but you do spend more time.Len911 wrote: Most daws have an audio-to-midi type of program. There are so many ways to do it, but the dedicated tools do take less time and most of the time the results are same or better than doing it by hand, hit by hit.
