The thing about a synthesizer is that you can generate your own sounds from the elemental waveforms and modulations. Not current is probably more about the phrasing, arpeggios and rhythms than the actual sound. It's like currency in the language, there are very few new words, but many different pronunciations, phrasings, and alternate meanings of words.

If you don't listen and like "current", then how can you ever include it into your own compositions? That's my problem! :o
For example, because I like Bob Marley, I might pronounce man as mon if I am singing one of his songs, on the other hand, I pronounce aunt as ant, and I know most Black people pronounce aunt as on'tee. But I'll probably never pronounce aunt as on'tee.

Buy pre-sets. There are chainsmokers-style synth presets that one sound company made that you can buy for like $50

Hey guys and gals,

Thank you so much for the input. Im not really good at manipulating the synths I have to change the preset sounds but I am going to start learning. I guess we all have the same stuff to overcome. I am glad to be a part of this Taxi Family.

Thanks again
Mike

Thanks for asking that question. I had been meaning to pose something similar.

No, it's been in every Roland synth since the D50.

It's a fair point that I maybe didn't quite make in my prior post that you should use the presets as a jumping off point, even if you're buying new presets. Also one of the nicer things about soft synths is that many have online communities of enthusiasts/programmers updating their favorite virtual axe with bread and butter patches for various soundtrack and stage duties, and there's nothing inherently wrong with buying scads of patches from professional programmers, if you've got more money than time.

Somewhere, somebody is still updating patches for a DX7 so they can use an axe they know well with their Gaga tribute band. You don't necessarily need to buy the latest whizbang bleeding edge tech to get a contemporary sound; rack modules from the 90s are cheap, plentiful and can provide firepower that would be pretty spendy today, in terms of hardware, and 16-bit samples still sound as good as they ever did, which is better than good enough. Quick example, an old Kawai GMega lying about the studio was recently pressed into service because I remembered it had a particularly good English horn; once the cheap/cheesy and severely dated digital reverb was removed in favor of a modern convolution engine, the result was so surprisingly good, I went spelunking for more sounds.

Telefunkin wrote:Nexus certainly has some impressive demos. It worries me though that its 249 Euros to start, but there's 6000 Euros of add-ons  DO you get a good sprinkling of just about everything with the basic pack, or are the add-ons necessary?
Not sure you watch the video? It's the sounds from the factory presets.
You don't need to buy the full version, just expand with the add ons you like...

That's what I like. Many choices...!

This is really good info folks. I'm learning already. Wish I could sit down with some of you for a few days and watch you create current sounds out of dated ones. Sure would be educational. Nexus does look good, but I agree it could become really pricey really quick.

Thanks and Keep the advice coming

One reason people still buy Omnisphere after all these years and generations is that you only have to learn the architecture once, so you can get around quickly, and Spectrasonics keeps filling the hopper with updated grist for their sound mill and the workflow is consistent across their product range. This seems like a pretty good model.

The whole ironic thing here is that many composers who write to spec or do in-house writing for electronic based scores, all use vintage real synths like the Jupiter 8, ARP Odyssey, Minimoog, Yamaha DX1, Ensoniq ESQ-1, etc.

Those synths and patches have been used on hundreds of 80's and 90's albums. I do understand that waves, parameters, modulations, etc can be tweaked for new sounds.
