Need help with CPU overload running Alicia keys in Kontakt

Post by stevecollom » Sat Jun 02, 2012 12:40 pm

I am running Pro Tools 8 on a mac pro quad core intel xeon, 6 gig ram, operating system 10.6.8

I keep getting the CPU is out of power please increase CPU.... error. so i increase it to 1024 (the biggest i can go) but it still stops with that error. I have no other plugins going. CPU is at 1% before i play a note then jumps to 40 where it spikes. This only happens with "Alicias Keys"

Is there any tricks or tips that you might know to either increase cpu or limit what kontakt wants?

also buying extra ram wont help this issue right?

thanks
steve

Hi!
You can try this:

* Update everything you have with NI
* Try to decrease the voices in Kontakt for this piano

6 gig of ram should be more than enough to run this piano. Also the quad core.

Best of luck!

Does it happen with all presets of AK? Even the dry ones? Since it's only happening with AK it's possible there is an issue with the AK specific convolution impulses.

I've used AK quite a bit and have never gotten any weird behavior from it. I have slightly more RAM but a weaker CPU so you should nave plenty of both to run this without the problems you're describing.

You could also try increasing the preload buffer in Kontakt's DFD engine to see if that makes a difference.

If none of it works I would try reinstalling AK and adding the library back to Kontakt.

Are you using K4 or K5? Some newer updates of 'powered by Kontakt' instruments may be glitchy in K4 since a lot has changed behind the scenes despite almost identical looks.

oh another thing. The samples are on an external drive... would that be the problem?

Is the drive a USB drive? If so, that could be the problem. USB 2 might be OK but it's best if it's at least FW400.

Considering it's only happening with AK and that it's happening with only one note playing it seems fairly clear that it's some type of bug, not system limitations.
Unless all of your other K5 libraries are on a different drive...it doesn't make sense the drive would stream those okay but is choking when asked to stream just a few AK voices.
Also if it had to do with drive issues changing the DFD buffer setting would almost certainly change the behavior...

Don't think more RAM is going to help in Protools - it can only access 4GB until PT 11 comes out.

you can probably load lots of stuff in Kontakt standalone using the memory server, but if your protools session is getting to be between 2gb and 4gb, you are going to start having hickups.

If its a protools only issue, you can try trashing preferences etc. and sometimes that can help it run smoother. you can do that manually by finding the files and deleting, empty trash and restart, or you can use this little utility. http://www.jcdeshaies.com/

A lot of people having CPU overloads / 6128 errors, and other things get some relief by actually trashing the prefs and so on for ProTools.
