Re: New member contemplating first pitch
Thanks, John. I'm glad to hear that opening line works as it was meant to! Do the TV Film listing show up in the standard membership or do I have to do the "upgrade" to see those?

Re: New member contemplating first pitch
Forever comes to an end, for me. So!!
You sound so much like Willie Nelson! All that was missing was the battered ol classical guitar and a harmonica. That's a compliment in case you're wondering!!
Man, so shooting for that dark Nick Drake type stuff, eh? ... I don't know if this makes sense, but to me the appeal of the references is the fact they sound broken down. Beaten. I love that sound... (Freudian slip showing??) I'm referring to the voice, especially. Broken. Your's has emotion. Nice nice tone! But to me, maybe it's in the phrasing... I'd play with it. It doesn't sound beaten. You ever listen to Ray Charles phrase his words? It's what Bach is to soul. Almost sing off the melody. The melody is a jumping off point, but then stagger the words. You've heard about speaking it first. Just speak the line. Literally. Speak it with feeling but no musicality. Then inch into music mode... lol I'm sure I'm making tons of sense...
For the record, I am SOOOO working on my voice. Everytime I preach about singing, it's only to remind myself what I still need to do..
Good song!
Thanks for the listen!
Oh, really nice mix, IMO

Yeah, like I really needed to cry today.
As a noob, I can't really advise on submitting or not. But I think you're a real songwriter with a very engaging voice.
The only thing I can see tweaking is what LRC said about the phrasing, and you're already about 90% there.

For instance, Read all the listings under the singer/songwriter heading.

Hey UncBilly...I'm glad I struck a chord with the old heart there...that's what we strive for. And thanks again, Russell.

Re: New member contemplating first pitch
mitch (dave?) welcome to the forums! all good peeps here, you will like it.
i listened to the 'forever' track...really nice. i hear the willie nelson thing graham picked up on. since you write, sound and phrase like him, i would go even deeper into that style, at least for a tune like this.
couple of quick things, in terms of vocal eq, i would scoop out a little somewhere around 2k. it's a little too bright somewhere in that bandwidth.
as graham alluded, this song would jump emotionally if your vocal performance was more 'beat up'. you could sing some of the phrases in a more country soul/bluesy style...it's pretty 'straight' right now. also listen to billie holiday in terms of pushing and pulling notes timewise.
from the beginning, the song feels like it's going to build as it proceeds, but it doesn't. maybe create a dynamic build with a drum/bass at an appropriate point somewhere around 2:00. just spitballin', there are other ways to do it without a rhythm section.
very nice work!

Why would you ask that, Hector? No, all wonderful stuff and I appreciate that you took the time to critique each song. Cool troubadour painting, too! I look forward to listening to something of yours soon.
