Thanks so much, Paulie. Can never stop learning about EQ.

My teacher makes me use my ears all the time (Russell is correct; the ear is King, or Queen in my case) , and he says if the sample sound is good to start, you don't need much EQ.

His sense of what sounds right is so subtle and refined, he's making me hear better, too.
