No More Ability To Convert to mp3 on iTunes!!

Post by becw75 » Fri Sep 29, 2017 7:24 pm

Hi

Have people noticed that the ability to convert to an mp3 is now gone from iTunes?

I'm not happy about this.

Can convert to m4a.

Are you sure? I haven't upgraded my version for a while. Is your import format setting set to mp3? It's always been that you can creat a format version based on the import format type (e.g. import as wav, can convert to wav, import as aif, can convert to aif, etc).

Try an open source program like Audacity... it's free
http://www.audacityteam.org/home/

For video...VLC Media... it's free also
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

You may need to download a codec, like Lame for mp3, but there are tutorials and links to show how to do it. Usually the codecs for mp3s require a separate download and not included because of licensing restrictions. They're free for individuals but cost the software company.

This is how you can import M4A files into Audacity, then you can just save them as mp3

Thanks Guys,

Hi Casey, yes I'm sure.

Thanks Len. Looks like will have to use 3rd party. Not happy about using 3rd party options.... advertisements etc seem to make their way onto the computer and stop it from working properly.

Bec, I've had both programs for a long time and have never had any malware from them. I agree you must be careful what you download. I usually research whatever I download before I download it if I am not familiar with it, and also the source of the download.

One other thing. Are you right clicking on the tune or going to "File / Create New Version / Create MP3 Version"?

I've been using a program called "Switch" from NCH Audio to do my conversions for years now. Works great, fast and easy! :D

I think they still offer a free version.

Hey Bec,

I just did it yesterday using what seems to be the most recent version of iTunes (12.7.0.166)—clicked on the track, then File—convert—create mp3 version. Not sure if this is the way you were doing it before, but it's still working for me!

Don't see any outstanding updates so I'm assuming my iTunes is current...

Good luck!

BTW, if you are using iTunes only to convert those files, I personally think the stand alone converter programs are much better. Not talking audio quality, but speed, convenience, etc. I find iTunes to be a pig-- slow to launch with a ridiculously confusing user interface. I hate launching it JUST to convert a file.

I love using "Switch" from NCH Audio. So fast and easy. And there are many other similar programs available for free out there.

Best
:D Casey
