Not Getting Paid

Post by jude3 » Tue Sep 08, 2009 4:50 pm

I have maybe close to 100 compositions in some pretty big libraries right now but I have not seen not even one placement yet.Is that normal? is there something I need to check on or something?

Depends on when those tracks were placed in the libraries, how they market the catalog etc.E.g. you might finish a given track and sign a deal for it in January 2009, but depending on how the library markets the track it might not actually go out to their clients until e.g. August 2009 (especially true if they still manufacture CDs, in which case the lead time might be even greater). Now it would be unusual for a track that was released in August 2009 to be used right away, more likely it will take 3-12 months (or even much longer) for a track to be used because it usually takes the client a while to get to know new additions to their libraries. So this would put us between Nov 2009 and Aug 2010. Once a placement occurs it will take another 6-9 months for the PRO royalties to show up at the door step, assuming the production company turned in the cue sheets in a timely fashion. So the first PRO money would come in around July 2010 to March 2011.Placements do happen more quickly on occasion, but sometimes they also take a lot longer.Personally I'm always surprised if I see any PRO money for a given track inside of 24 months from signing a deal for that track. It happens but I would say it's an exception in my experience...The above figures are averages and assume a decent size catalog which you do have (in other words I would nor expect every single song to make money withing 2-3 years of release)...but you may not have signed all those tracks at the same time which would have to be taken into account...One thing you *should* do is keep an eye on your song catalog on your PRO's website. Just to make sure things are being registered properly etc.HTH,matto

I agree with Matto's time line here. I had a song with a library back in 2004. The song didn't get placed into a tv commercial until the summer of 2006. I didn't see payment until mid 2008 and most of it was back pay because the network didn't present the cue sheet in time.
