Old Tango new edit

Post by mazz » Mon Mar 30, 2009 3:40 pm

Here's a Tango I did 2 or 3 years ago with a combination of EWQLSO and and accordion from EW Gypsy. The first version was way too long so I did an edit on it to make it almost half as long.I did a bunch of listening to tango music before I composed this but I haven't done any tango stuff since then. I really love tango and it's so varied and emotional. Maybe this one is OK, we'll find out!!I'm taking a chance on this because I don't have time to write a new one so here's a roll of the dice:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... Enjoy,Mazz

Mazz,I think I remember this one. It's hard to believe, if you did this awhile ago, that it hasn't found a home!!Great orchestral stuff as usual.Chuck

Thanks Christi and Chuck! The piece didn't work in it's first incarnation and I never re-visited it to edit it or anything until now. Maybe it will find a home! Your remarks are encouraging!!Cheers!Mazz

I remember this one, Mazz! Excellent! Does Gipsy has an accordion or a bandoneon?

It has bandoneon, 3 accordions, steel string guitar (I've used it a lot), classical guitar, cimbalon (I use that a lot, I love the sound), django guitar (acoustic guitar chords for rhythm guitar), flamenco guitar (great strums), trombone, and a fantastic solo violin. It's a very good library, IMO.

Mazz,You get great blends on your instrument combinations. It's interesting that both you and Chuck used piano on your Tangos--I know nothing about the genre, but was surprised to hear that instrument in there. Is your initial melodic statement a doubled flute and violin? There's something slightly unnatural about it--maybe the vibrato? Heard it again at 1:20.This mix sounds very dry to me. Is that the sound you prefer or have you changed your thinking about that in the intervening 2-3 years since you recorded this?Vince

Hi Vince,The initial statement is just a solo violin doubled with violin section. The solo violin is from EW Gypsy and the section is EWQLO. The overtones might not be blending very well, I'm not sure. We'll see where this goes but I might need to go back in and work on that. The drier mix was on purpose and I chose that because I had done a lot of listening to authentic tango music and a lot of it was done with smaller groups, just a few strings, etc. A lot of what I heard sounded like is was recorded in smaller rooms as well. So I wanted the mix to be closer to what the genre seemed to sound like. I try to let the music and style dictate the mix rather than having a standard way to mix everything. If I did another tango today, I'd probably shoot for something similar, mix wise. And yes, they do use piano, at least on the albums that I listened to.Thanks for listening!!Mazz

Hey Mazz,This sounds on the money stylistically. Good composition.I really wanted to put something together for this too, but I'm still tripping over myself on the DAW experience.I completely agree with you about piano and accordion. It's surprising how well these instruments blend together. I've got a piece I'm working on right now that uses the same voices. If you own the movie "True Lies", there's a great tango played at the very end of the movie. Piano, violin and accordion (can't remember whether there are other instruments). You may wish to check this version out for a comparison.Best wishes,Al
