I think I'll buy a plasma HDTV instead. BTW, AudioMidi is just down the street from where I live. They're nice folks to deal with. Oh, yes, I've paid lots of California sales tax when I could have done mail order. It's my civic duty. In appreciation, Gov. Terminator has asked me and my wife to come over for dinner this weekend. If you can swing Platinum at all, I feel it is a great investment. Although the Gold library is mostly what the middle (Full) mic position in Platinum gives you, Platinum does have more articulations overall. Articulations are where it's at in virtual orchestra music. I wish this deal was going when I bought the library, my credit card is still in rehab I credit Platinum library with helping me land a few gigs and it really upped the quality of my demo.Good luck,John

Actually, according to East West, Gold + Gold XP is identical to Platinum + Platinum XP as far as articulations. What you're missing out on is the 24bit samples and the other two mic positions.I got the Gold XP fairly recently and it's a superb addition, and it's on Group Buy right now (for $298), so for anybody who has Gold that's a great opp...

" If you are expecting something like a hardware workstation, where you just select a patch, it's instantly loaded, and you can play it immediately... there's very little like that in the software world."Nothing you can just load and play immediately is capable of producing the results you can get by using sample libraries with lots of articulations. Modern sample libraries are getting more playable, but you still have to work to get serious results.Put another way, the software solutions these days have it all over any hardware workstation. I used Kurzweils for over ten years, and their orchestral sounds are laughable next to what we have today. The K2500X has a lot of great sounds, but in all honesty I haven't use the audio outs on mine for a few years - it's just a master keyboard; everything I use regularly is software.

Quote:I have EW Gold + XP and it is working out very well. I was tempted by the Philharmonik library, but decided to stay with a Kontakt format and EW's libraries seem very well regarded and a reliable option, whether you go for silver, gold or platinum. Gold's sound certainly contains reverb which makes them trickier for pop mixes, but to my ears, reducing the release trails is adequate to get rid of some of the reverb, especially for denser pop mixes. The reverb that lays over the main samples basically reinforces the main tones so I don't find it that distracting. Just to clarify...it's not really "reverb", it's the real ambience of Benaroya Hall in Seattle where Gold was recorded. It can be a little overwhelming for some applications but for the vast majority I find it very pleasing, even for country string arrangements and the like.

Quote:Can someone tell me why I bought an Intel Mac?Yeah...it pays to check for IntelMac compatibility with any software you buy these days, there's still a number of stuff that's not compatible yet...There's even a thread somewhere on this board stating that you need to upgrade to K2 (or EW's upcoming "Play" engine) to get IntelMac compatibility for Gold. Guess you missed that... Then again...K2 is a great sampler, and has probably the widest third party support of any sample format currently available, so, in and of itself, that's a good purchase IMHO.
