Pacific Rim soundtrack riff = Black Sabbath's Iron Man?

Post by musicalweather » Sat Sep 14, 2013 10:05 am

One of my piano students wants to play the theme from the Pacific Rim movie. Is it just me, or does that first riff sound a little too much like Black Sabbath's "Iron Man"?

Here's the Pacific Rim theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DABGdvCOs4

Here's Iron Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LjbMVXj0F8

What's even more peculiar, is that he composed for the movie, "Iron Man"

Not very similar to me.

They both contain one short melodic section where the riff slides up a down on a minor 2nd interval. Almost like a mordant or trill.

That's about the only similarity beyond the fact those both are "rock". :)
