Pearl vs. Ivory — a comparison of 2 VST pianos

Post by Onaginoffegin » Tue Mar 14, 2017 4:34 pm

I made a comparison track of two grand piano virtual instruments: Pearl, by Impact Soundworks, and Ivory by Synthogy.
In the track, I play some random notes in different ranges, and let them sustain.
I used the same midi file for both pianos.
Pearl is the first piano, and plays for about one minute.
This is what the two pianos sound like out of the box. I did no tweaking or EQ.

I've been using Ivory for years. It's always received high marks from screeners and TAXI members for its sound.
It's about 80 gigs, and offers a number of variations of three grand pianos: Steinway, Yamaha and Bosendorfer.
It does not require Kontakt, and costs about $350.
It does require an iLok key.

Earlier this year I bought Pearl. It's about 40 gigs, offers one piano — a Yamaha C7 — four mic positions, a number of FX, and cost $119.
It requires Kontakt.
It's also received some nice remarks for sound quality when I recently got some solo piano pieces forwarded.
It takes a while to load — about two minutes, I think, but I can deal with that.
Ivory loads pretty much instantly.
