percussion loops 6/8 feel

Post by billykidd » Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:03 am

I work alot with drum/percussion loops like the m-audio sound libraries...what I'm looking for are drum loops in 6/8 time or that have a 6/8 feel...all the loops I have are 4/4. Any ideas out there? thanks.BillyKidd

Try Big Fish Audio, they have lots of loop libraries with drums and percussion in 6/8. I write a lot in 6/8 time and the libraries I've gotten from them have provided a lot of good loops for my needs, just make sure you check the "What's on this disc" section for each library. Make sure it lists 6/8 (or 3/4) specifically, a lot of libraries just have 4/4 time.HTHAntonio

Something to remember when looking for loops is to check if they allow their loops to be used in library music. Some do and some don't. I never thought of this until I started getting some of my stuff in libraries and on the air. Now I check every vendor's licensing agreement.Read Big Fish Audio's licensing policy (it's on their website somewhere) if you think there is a chance you might eventually get some music in a library. In fact, read every loop seller's policy, you just don't want them coming after you if you get something placed in a library that eventually ends up on TV. Most are pretty good, East West requires 2 other sounds layered with their loops, others just don't want them isolated at any time. Big Fish may be more strict, if I remember correctly.I don't want to dampen anyone's spirits here, but we all have the potential to get some placements via TAXI and it would be a drag if some legal crap came down on anyone just because of a simple loop!Take care,MazzPS: This generally doesn't apply to sample libraries (multisampled orchestral instruments, for example).

Quote:Something to remember when looking for loops is to check if they allow their loops to be used in library music. Some do and some don't. This is a good point. I was using drums from some Pro Sessions libraries (the Jimmy Chamberlin loops are fantastic) until I realized that most of their loop libraries do not allow them to be used in libraries. One of the libraries that has been discussed on this forum before that accepts submissions on their web site is now requiring to submit copies of the license agreement for all loops/samples used on a track. That's how I realized I couldn't use my drum tracks and I had wasted a bunch of money. The stuff I've gotten from Big Fish Audio (all of the "Roots of..." series) does not forbid use in libraries but, as mazz said, it is best to check each library's license agreement.

I think loop library makers should loosen up their restrictions on music library usage given that music libraries are now a much larger market for composers than in the past.I bet we see more and more music libraries requiring proof of license for samples and loops. In this light I would recommend against using any loops downloaded free from the internet. Unless you can absolutely guarantee they are clean, I would stay away!Mazz

The new Nashville expansion for EZ Drummer has 6/8 stuff in it. They are palyed by Harry Stinson and the sounds were engineered by Chuck Ainley. I think there are some demos of these on Toontracks website. The loops are midi, so they can be edited. Also, all the loops included in the EZ Drummer expansions can be used to trigger any of the kits in the program and/or expansions. No restrictions in licensing either.Chuck

Billy,I agree with Chuck, EZ drummer is worth a look, it's more flexible than audio loops and the drum sounds can be mixed to taste. The price is pretty reasonable as software goes. You owe it to yourself to check it out.Mazz
