Piano-based jazz instrumentals . . . .

Post by niallyboy » Mon Apr 01, 2013 11:49 am

Regarding:

"PIANO-BASED JAZZ ENSEMBLE INSTRUMENTAL PIECES are NEEDED for BACKGROUND SOURCE MUSIC in a Major Hollywood Studio’s FEATURE FILM. The Music Supervisor is looking for the kind of song that will play during a sophisticated wedding reception. They need it to sound like a 3 to 6 piece ENSEMBLE . . . . We need a track that has some room to breathe. If the music is transparent, and doesn’t jump off the screen or get in the way of dialogue, then it will work for what we need.” RELAXED, Down-to-Mid TEMPO will work best. They’re not looking for anything fast, furious, or frenetic."

The examples are both jazz trios: Bill Evans and Tommy Flanagan. I wonder what the 4th, 5th and/or 6th piece instrumentation would be to still keep it piano-based; certainly not a horn, I would think. I'm considering a submission that is more Latin-tinged, with guiro and congas, even though the "a-la's" are swing jazz. It's TINY DEEVEE, on my taxi page. Love some feedback regarding its doability, please.

Cheers,

Salty

Hi Nially

Im guessing you can use horns as long as piano is very prominent in the piece- probably has to carry the melody.
If they just wanted Piano Trio pieces then I'd hope they would've said, Piano Trio- but you never know :o :?: :? :?

lookin through a couple of pieces too to see what might fit; these are very tricky... I like little Devee b/c it has a sorta similar progression to witchcraft- the question is will they handle the Latin thing rather than a Swing thing; Id probably give it a shot, its a good piece.

thanks for the input, Salt Man--

As a heads up, Little Deevee has flute in it, and Tiny Deevee is edited without the flute. If it sounds too sliced and diced to anyone's ears, lemme know, s'il vous plait.

I stuck with piano trio. I was confused by the pitch because they wanted simple and elegant but Bill Evans "Witchcraft" is pretty bustling and busy. I would have added a sax if I'd had time to one of them. I just found out I got 2 forwards and 1 return. The return was because it didn't sound enough like an ensemble, more like a solo piano.

forwards: (on my taxi site)
I Can't Help But Wonder (trio)
An Old Fashioned Girl (trio)

returns:
Midnight Reflections

I love your tunes and playing Nially, hope you did well!
Steve
