piano solo cover tracks?

i've never submitted to a covers listing so i apologize if this is an obvious question. there's a lot of piano sheet music to be found for soundtracks, but i'm guessing the arrangement of whatever song(s) we cover needs to be original? i.e. i can't just record myself playing someone else's sheet music and submit it, right?

again, i'm a serious n00b as to the various legalities surrounding cover versions, recordings, arrangements, performances, etc. any enlightenment would be much appreciated!
