Well, I watched this evening. No clue as to how they got the contestants. Just like "Top Chef", "Runway Models", "Top Designer" -- frankly, I can't keep track of all these "reality shows". This show, to me, was people who had talent (the judges), but who didn't realize that there "talent" was a lot of luck. That one lucky chance will build on another. And that's why there are contestants on this show. They are all loking for that open door to fame.
I found the show depressing. Contestants sniping at each other. ("Reality -- so what? When did the time come when you have to insult a fellow artist, just to prove how "real" you are?)
And then, the judges, pontificating as if they had the holy grail. Not a single one of then knows which of the songs on their program, or anyplace else will be hit. Except for the ones on this show, that they give a musical blessing to. This show is another marketing tool for someone, and I'd love to know if the marketing requirements parallell Siimon Cowell's.
Bottom line: I really, really hate the public humiliation of anyone who loses in one of these "competions."

I'm hooked. Don't much care for the contrived conflict or obnoxious personalities endemic to the reality-show genre, but I'm finding value in watching the work. Have to say I haven't agreed with some of the judges' decisions. In episode one, they picked the absolute worst hook, but the resulting song scraped by. In episode two, they ranked the best dance floor hook I've heard in weeks as second best, resulting in a near miss for one of the show's best writers. (and Kara needs to lose those shoulder pads, they made her look like she was uncomfortable in the nightclub scenes) They haven't been wrong yet about the weakest link on a team, though, and I kinda think the contest's format makes a certain sense. Some very talented young writers on the show; sure hope the $100,000 isn't recoupable.

I saw it tonight, it's a pretty good show. Yeah there's typical reality show drama but there has to be something that doesn't only appeal to songwriters if the show is gonna have a wide enough audience to stay on the air.

But they show enough of the creative process and play enough of the music to make it interesting for songwriters to follow along. I certainly find it interesting enough to keep watching and might even learn a thing or two.

I happened to agree with pretty much everything tonight...the most original hook got the nod but then had the originality squeezed out of it in the writing process, the hook with the musically strongest melody was otherwise extremely bland and despite freebie direction from Jewel that flaw was never addressed, and the song that came third out of the 'hook' competition was the only one that was developed into a real song thanks to people putting aside their egos and allowing each other to focus on their individual strengths.
Always a good rule to keep in mind when collaborating.

Good show, I will tell all of my songwriter friends about it. It's cool to have a show that's really about songs and the writing process instead of yet another singing competition...

Yeah, I wonder about that. Is the average viewer understanding terms like "hook", "bridge", etc.?

We need a reality show, "Top Forum Posters"...

Man..... I totally forgot this was on.... last night, missed the TAXI TV show except the last 3 minutes...then got busy with some other goings on and ....

The good news is, I watched the Taxi TV show this morning ... it was very good.

I have to agree with Ott's observation about how the contestants on the "loosing team" tend to really take some unabashed cheap shots at each other. I don't think I've seen one loosing team that didn't turn on each other in a last ditch effort to save their own lame butts.

I'd still like to hear more of the judge's chatter about the loosing team and the song and why they vote the way they do.

Any body using the SHAZAM app?

Ick! Showmance rears its ugly head. Again, a bone to pick with the judges; they chose the right song, winner was obvious, Johnny really knocked the hook challenge out of the park, (only writer to put the hook in the title, and the finished song raised goosebumps-killer first line!) but chose the wrong "worst song", allowing an impassioned performance to cloud their judgement, imo. Again, they did send home the weakest writer on the losing team, but it just doesn't seem fair when that team had a stronger song, even if with a weaker lyric; I think the guest judge agreed with me, but it ain't his show, they just cut away from him talking. Sucks that you need Shazzam app and a cell phone to see complete judge deliberations, the most useful bits.

I am loving the love duo! I think they are definitely some of the most talented- along with Sonyae's team from last night's episode. The Hawaii girl definitely needed to go.

I personally liked Jess's song the best, but that style is just more up my alley. I agree the lyrics could have used some work, though.
