As some of you may know my desktop computer with my recording set up got a short. I had to wait a long time before I could even have it looked at because my jewelry business in Indonesia went belly up during the economic crisis and had to tide myself over in Thailand teaching English for a stretch which pays enough to starve.
When I finally got back to Bali where my desktop caught fire, a family mice had turned it into a nice little home and now every system is damaged and none of it can be repaired.
Previously I had asked about getting a laptop set up and many of you advised against it. I was thinking of portability since thats the reason the desktop didn't come with me to Thailand when we had to move.
But after owning a laptop for a relatively short period of time it needs both a new battery and a new fan which seems to justify a new computer not repair. It makes me think, "How many times will I have to buy a whole system over the next few years if I buy a laptop?"
Don't answer that. I'm sure I know. Anyway, I was REALLY happy with the bundle of Cubase with Wave Lab, MixMasterDSP, and Emulator X. It was the cheapest system that would do everything I wanted and it was perfect. Anything comparable on the market now?
I asked before but couldn't scrape the money together. There's money now. Wondering if the answer has changed.
Also, I see there are some small desktop computers available. Any experience with those? That would improve the "being able to bring it with me if I need to move suddenly" feature.
Thanks,...

Sorry to hear of your computing woes... I "think" Cubase 5 by itself will do all of the things that the bundle you liked did. All of the modern DAWs handle audio, mixing and VSTs to one degree or another. I'm not a Cubase user although I have version 4, but just by itself, no bundle. Having said that, you should probably check out version 5 for yourself.
Personally, I can't see myself ever buying a desktop again unless it was a "second" machine. For me, I find the mobility of a laptop so important that it out weighs the need for a killer desktop. I'm sure there will be others who have the exact opposite opinion. Fair enough!
Good Luck!

Sorry, but this funny sentence made me laugh.gongchime wrote:When I finally got back to Bali where my desktop caught fire, a family mice had turned it into a nice little home and now every system is damaged and none of it can be repaired.

I use a desktop & a laptop for music and both are great.

I looked at Cubasis 5 and it looks like it will do everything. I thought I posted this replay already but guess not.
