I use to own the AW1600 (the AW2400 baby brother) it was a great little machine to record live bands. However once I got into recording via a laptop, I could no longer justify paying so much money for a stand-alone DAW.just my 2 cents..

A laptop DAW is a great option if you can a afford a compatible multichannel interface, trouble is, if you're the sort of engineer that uses six tracks jes' for the drums, you don't have many choices, and Apple's making the situation worse instead of better by phasing out Firewire 800 on their portables.

Quote:And I would definitely recommend listening to Jeff's tunes, just for the sheer enjoyment, besides the fact they were recorded with the Korg! Thanks Steve! Quote:And here's a ditto on Jeff's stuff. I still love that high energy harmonica track! Thanks Bill!

And there is only ONE firewire 800 port on the extremely expensive MBP! What is that about?Pretty soon the only way to get firewire on a machine will be to custom build a PC or buy a Mac Pro I am still livid about the firewire thing on the latest updates of Apple portables. Its like they've decided to just make portable email/itunes machines in different sizes and colors. Ok I know that was an off-topic rant...sorry -Steve

It does suck that Apple is leaning away from firewire, but I don't think they will do away with it completely. Companies like Motu and even Digidesign are still coming out with new interfaces with Firewire 800. Firewire is faster than USB 2.0 and many folks (in & out of the music industry) still need to use it. Even if Apple does away with Firewire, there will be someone out there that will come out with a significant replacement or adapter.

I just like to use everything I've got. I have an old VS2480 DAW. The DAW is a computer, just dedicated to audio. I run my synths and mics into it as well as my VST plugins from my laptop via an interface. If the 2480 craps out I can still do all the recording on my laptop. Usually, while recording, I let the laptop handle midi and sync. Later I master on it. My old 2480 is what I have used for a long time and I'm just used to it. As far as time efficiency goes I can fly on the thing. I realize that they are making these things with more and more features but to tell you the truth, I don't really know why they don't make it anymore.I got really irritated with apple when they went to the Intel chipset instead of the motorola. The motorola chip MADE apple. I made a switch from Apple to an Alienware laptop. http://www.alienware.com This is an EXCELLENT machine! Somewhat pricey but it has been worth it. I've had it for about a year and a half and so far I have not had a single problem!Just a suggestion.
