cubase Le vs new PC w Vista

Post by will » Sun Apr 26, 2009 5:04 pm

Just started up a new PC with vista and 64 bit processing and loaded on my Presonus firebox to record. Probelm is the cubase LE software is hanging and may not be new enough to function (a couple years old now).I seek suggestions from my songwriting friends re good new functional alternative to cubase le SOFTWARE for minimal $$$. I find cubase le has NO support because it was a free tool included with my recording hardware when purchased.

I don't know if Tracktion 3 works with Vista, but it's a reasonably priced alternative to Cubase/Sonar, etc.

Some hardware makers offer a free upgrade if you bought your hardware with LE within the past year. The Tascam folks do. It was more than a year when I found this out but since my Cubase LE tended to crash, I bitched a lot to Tascam and they sent me LE4. (I don't know what runs with Vista). Also, check out forums such as this one:http://forums.presonus.com/showthread.php?t=4462 Good luck!Casey

Support for Tracktion seems to be in the wind; I'm anxiously awaiting news. In the meantime, it's still the most elegant and easy-to-learn DAW in the market, though version 3 doesn't work reliably on some Intel Macs. Reaper is enjoying robust support, and while it ain't pretty, it gets the job done quick and cheap.

Really appreciate the input everyone. I was able to get a trial download of Tracktion and try it out (trial "noise" and all). I saw it on sale at about $100 making it very tempting despite the kinda weird colors in the background of the dashboard. Some chats indicated Tracktion has bugs, no support, and may "disappear." Recording is not optional so I need something soon.Reaper now has me excited as an option. Definitely going to look at that before I peel the green.Cubase LE was OK for me when I had it working so maybe the LE4 version is something to shop around for as well. I realize I kinda followed the marketing carrot having used the free tool becasue now it is biasing me to want what I was accustomed to before. (A lesson in there somewhere . . . most of us are trying to sell and market . . .)CaseyH, Bradn, Mojobone. . . grateful to you. Will

Sonar may be the only DAW option that's truly ready for 64-bit Windows, but you may come across some hardware driver issues, and possibly with third-party plug-ins; YMMV, and it costs nuthin' to give Reaper a try.
