Logic. Sampletekk. Ugh.-new question
i know what you're going to say, RTFM, and i have been (slowly, admittedly), i just pretty much don't get it. so if anyone is willing to walk me through this i'd really appreciate it. i'm trying to graduate from GB to Logic. First thing i did after installing LE was buy black grand by sampletekk (EXS 24 which i was told to be logic compatible) so i could enjoy having a higher quality piano sound. only thing is how do i use it?! where is it? i know i properly downloaded it on my computer, now how do i get it as one of my instruments in logic? how do i open it?! can i import a GB song and replace the piano part with the sampletekk? -juliet

Hi Julia, I'll see if I can help. First you'll need to install the Sampletek piano. The installer should be on your desktop. I'm guessing it's a folder inside of which should be an installer. Double click the installer and it should place the piano audio files in your Samples folder and the EXS24 file in your 'Sampler Instruments' folder. Go Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments and you should see the file in there. Now in Logic add a track to your arrange page by pressing the + sign near top left part of the page. You'll get a dialogue which asks if want to add an 'audio track' or 'software instrument track'. Select 'software instrument'. Now you'll have a new track. Select the track by clicking on it, it'll turn grey. Look to the right side of the page and you'll see two faders. Above the left fader you'll see a pull down slot that says 'output 1-2', above that slot you'll see a blank pull down slot. Press on that slot and you'll see all your available software instruments including the EXS24. Select the EXS24 and it should open on top of the arrange page. On the EXS24 you'll see a window on the upper right with --- in it. Click on that window and you'll see a pull down menu which should include your sampletek piano. If you get that far, post again and I'll show you how to import your Garage Band song.Good luck, gear tweakers unite! Re: Logic. Sampletekk. Ugh.
hi Elser, you are awesome, thank you thank you thank you for such detailed and easy looking steps to follow. wouldn't you know it though, i'm stuck quite towards the beginning, i cannot find the stupid plus sign anywhere in my arranger window! (i'm running logic express 7.2.3-maybe it's not on this version?) i tried clicking on track/add new, and it gives me a grand piano, but no options to change it. any way to get around the plus sign or a way to make it appear?? thanks again!!!! -juliet

Hey Juliet, you're right, no plus sign in version 7. There should be just one fader as well, but I think otherwise it should work the way I put down. I think you go under 'File' to create a new track but I can't remember for sure. When you can upgrade to Logic 8, it's way easier.Wow you're in St. Lucia, what a cool place, I go there pretty often.Let me know how it goes, Elser

Re: Logic. Sampletekk. Ugh.
hi Elser, i finally got it figured out, you were right about where to click above the fader and all that. of course now i've got 100 other questions. i'm going to try devote some serious time over the next week to reading the manual and playing around with it so i won't ask any things that i could've figured out on my own. but here's one for the time being- just how much easier is Logic 8, is it worth the price of the upgrade?

Ya, it's worth the price. I've been using Logic for quite a long time, so I've got my way of working with it. When 8 came out it looked pretty different from the earlier versions but I was able to figure out the new interface just by looking at it and consequently I've adjusted my way of working in it. The version 8 interface is very intuitive and quick. I've even got my hardware effects and synths setup in it to work like plugins, pretty cool.

Hi Juliet, just so you know, I bought one of the Sampletekk pianos today and it's not working in the EXS24, there's something screwy going on with their exs. files, the sampler won't recognize them for some reason. Don't know if you ran into this, but I'll be scurrying around the web tonight trying to find the solution.

Hey Elser did you ever get it worked out? here's my issue----it plays the notes and they sound beautiful but the second i release the key i guess this crazy hissing noise, kinda like when you use a gate when recording. is there some function on esx24 to get rid of that? if i sustain the notes, keeping the keys down, it doesn't happen, but obviously i will want to be playing more than slow whole notes...

I bought the Emperor piano and had to try a number of different updates that were available on their site before I found one that works all the way across the piano. I originally bought the download version but never could get it working so they sent a DVD and finally it now works. Check to see it there's any updates for your piano on their website. I think the PMI instruments are the ones you really have to watch.Happy tweaking! Elser

Re: Logic. Sampletekk. Ugh.-new question
I don't know how they work in EXS 24 but in Kontakt, they're programmed to use (in the 7CG) three different "instruments" at the same time. One is for the notes when the pedal is up, one for when the pedal is down and one for the note releases. If you're only loading one of those sounds at a time, it will probably sound weird.Again, I'm not familiar at all with EXS24 but if there's some similar type of programming going on, you could only be hearing one segment of a sound that's designed to have more things loaded in to it at the same time.I hope this makes sense. You might want to go back and look at the documentation again. This is no slam on the guys at Sampletekk but English isn't their first language so you may have some interpreting to do. Send them an e-mail explaining what's up and maybe they can help you sort it out. I've always heard back from them in a few days or so.Good luck!!Mazz
