a simple question about mastering

Hi,We want an outside 3rd party to master our final mix. As a final product, we want 2 files from him/her: 1. MASTER (w/vox) 2. MASTER novox (music-only)We need the latter for film-tv, so it needs to 'sound exactly the same' as the music-mix in the MASTER (w/vox). I want to confirm how to get this done correctly. To a 'lowly lyricist', like me, it seems like this is probably how to do it: Send the studio engineer 2 wav files: 1. FINAL MIX (w/vox) 2. FINAL MIX novox (music-only)Then the engineer masters the 'vox' mix and applies the same exact mastering details to the 'novox' mix. Is this how it is done? Or is there more to it? Thanks,Dean

I would ask the producer what he/she needs in order to provide the two masters... but you're right to ask here first so you can talk to him/her effectively about it.

hey Dean, that's how it's done . . . nothing else to it. If this is your first time getting a pro mastering job be sure to hire someone you trust. Also, last time I checked there were some good mastering houses that have a "you don't pay until you're satisfied" policy.This guy has been around a long time & has some pretty informative stuff pertaining to mastering on his site. I know people who have used him & they have all been satisfied. At least do a little reading on his site, it could help answer a lot of questions tou mught have.http://www.drtmastering.com/idxfaq.htm
