Logic's messing with my head
Hey Logic Heads, here's one to wrap your brain around. Yesterday I was recording a song, I had probably 7 tracks of audio and 10 tracks of RMX and one EXS24 going. I had two guitar tracks panned L and R and assigned to a group. I then recorded 4 tracks of b/u vox. When I went to solo the 4 vox parts I heard guitar coming through the right channel even though the vox parts were soloed. I went and muted the guitar track and it was still there, pulled down the fader and still there. So I unsoloed the vox tracks started the song from the top and find that automation has stopped working for the 2 guitar tracks.I then created 2 new gtr tracks and duplicated the plugin settings of the old tracks, deleted the automation data, copied the audio files to the new tracks, recreated the automation data and got the same result. So I went back to an earlier version of the song, before the vox tracks were created, renamed it, saved it as a new project, created 4 new vox tracks, imported the vocal audio files from the old song and wala everything works....till I soloed the 4 vocal tracks and then the exact same behavior starts up again. I know this is boring and probably rare but just in case someone has run across I'd like to hear what you know about it. Thanks, Elser

Re: Logic's messing with my head
I'm not a Logic head but it sounds to me like you might have assigned one of the guitar tracks to the same group as the vocals, at least the right channel. You need to solo the vox tracks to see if the guitar was recorded on one of those tracks, I'm willing to bet that it was. This is something that's easy to do on any DAW, not just Logic. With so many options and buttons to look at these days, it would be easy to miss one that got pushed by accident. Good luck!Mazz

Sounds like Mazz has hit the nail on the head but just as an extra possible thought if not.Could it be that you have a reverb assigned to guitar that may well be poking through when you solo the vox. Unlikely but does happen in logic sometimes.

Re: Logic's messing with my head
Groups don't affect routing in Logic. It's not that.It sounds to me like you're soloing the auxes or output objects with whatever's assigned to them rather than the track/instrument objects. But it could also be routing confusion - which is easy enough to do in Logic, because it's not straightforward. It could also conceivably a routing issue in your audio interface if it has a loopback feature. Are you using an Apogee, RME, or Metric Halo interface by any chance?

Re: Logic's messing with my head
Hi mazz, ya, checked the audio files in the audio editor and found that the tracks were clean, no guitar. Everything is routed directly to outputs 1-2.Stoney, the gtr sound I'm hearing is definitely just the gtr with the plugins inserted in the track. There's no reverb assigned anywhere in the whole song except on the lead vocal.Nick, I am using a RME Hammerfall soundcard with Swissonic AD/DA. I'm not aware of the loop back feature so that's a possibility. One more thing I didn't mention is that my freeze files were acting erratically, sometimes frozen tracks wouldn't playback. When I first soloed the vocal tracks the two guitar tracks were frozen so I'm thinking perhaps the freeze file for the R guitar track was playing even though it shouldn't. I unfroze the track and behavior continued but perhaps it was the freeze file still playing. One more thing none of this explains is that the automation for the two gtr tracks stopped working. One more thing, sometimes the errant gtr track would suddenly peak at +6db, but not necessarily in the same place every time.I'm thinking it might be a bug in either the automation system or the freeze file system. I should probably post this on Logic Pro Help and Apple.elser

Re: Logic's messing with my head
I spent 2 days once a long time ago trying to figure out why i couldn't get Logic's routing happening. I had soloed the master fader, and it wasn't on my arrange page(Logic7). Sometimes the answer takes a few minutes, sometimes it takes a few days. And errant volume command can usually be found on the event list. Or hyper draw I also had a crazy problem once when I had a midi volume pedal connected to my keyboard, that was sending erratic controller 7 messages because the volume pedal's jack was starting to short out. Good luck Elser.

Re: Logic's messing with my head
Hey do any of you guys have a Logic 7 template that subgroups tracks, thru a different output (let's say output 2) and back into the Logic environment mixer - instead of out of logic to an 828, or whatever you use? Right now, I use busses for the subgrouping, and it's way too tedious. It's time to start compressing groups of tracks in my mixing. I'm quite happy to return favors any way I can.

Hi elserThis is a wild shot, but is it possible that you created your vocal audio tracks by copying your original guitar track which was panned right? I've found that when I have created more audio instrument tracks from previously existing tracks that they often link up in weird ways. I'm more of a MIDI guy, but perhaps the audio tracks behave in the same manner. If this is the case, try creating new audio tracks from scratch then importing the vocal parts into the newly created tracks. Make sure they are not copied from previous tracks.mewman

Steve, why not just insert an I/O plug-in on an aux or bus object? Won't that work?

Good luck Elser. Hey Steve, the only midi data in the whole song is 'note' data, no controller data at all. Also, one of the problems is that the automation on the 2 gtr tracks refused to work at all. Thanks anyways. elser
