Yep, diffusion and absorption are completely different topics.

Mojobone you are absolutely right which is why a room needs to be treated on a number of levels due to inherent standing waves.Short of changing the dimensions and shape of a room using a combination of diffusion and absorption can go a long way. Also diffusion is essential if your monitors are near to walls.

The test to find if a fabric makes a good cover for absorbers is to blow through it. If you can, it'll work. You might hit the Acoustics forum over at gearslutz, there's a wealth of data there. Ethan Winer and Glen Kuras are regulars. I've just finished treating my room with corner traps filled with batt fiberglass, and absorbers and clouds of Rockboard. Aside from being too hot to wear a long sleeved shirt and getting itchy arms, I had no problems.

Martin,Yeah I wrapped some 2' x 4' mineral wool panels in muslin fabric. Cheap and pretty effective although what I wouldn't give to change my room dimensions . I did get my room fairly flat (within 6 dB I believe), but not as good as I'd like. If you have carpet I'd recommend putting something semi reflective on some of them to avoid over damping in high frequencies.

thanks all - just finished the "acoustic works" and it sounds quite good, better then before.in the end it can be quite tricky, especially if a room has not been inteded as studio when it was built (that'll be the case for most of us). however, for me it works now.cheers,martin
