A serious side of Dave? Who would have thunk it? Do you play that fiddle shown in the pic, or are you a total midi guy?I use the melodyne pitch corection for guitar, bass, voice etc. Simple to use and that is coming from a guy who can't even us EZDRUMMER!!!!!!!!!Peace Paul

IMHO, the most important piece of gear in any studio is the monitors. If you can't trust what you are hearing, you can't make do a good mix no matter how much gear you have. Even then, the mix is affected by the sound of the room. I don't know what you are using now, but money spent on good speakers is very well spent. Also, to help with the room, check out IK Multimedia ARC Advanced Room Correction. It is a room analysis software plug-in that comes with a calibrated mic and you take readings around your room and it sets up a complete phase, balancing and EQ correction curve that you insert into your monitoring buss. You DO NOT print it to tape, it only corrects room and speaker problems and deficiencies. I have set it up in all 3 studios I work in, including my home studio. It took a little getting used to, because it flattens out the "HYPE" built in to many monitors and subs. But, as soon as I did some A/B mixes with it in and out, I was sold. Mixes using ARC transferred much better across different systems, cars, etc. I was starting with Genelecs too, so if it can make a huge difference with those, it must be doing something right! The program runs about $500, I think, and is worth every penny. Better monitoring equals better mixes every time.Wodinlord

nah you can compensate around monitors with multiple reference sources, you use enough set ups and you can get a good mix,hate to be contrary but i have found compensating for a room usually yeilds an off balance mix...just my 2 penniesnot saying monitors are not important, but you can mix around em, specially with the caliber of headphones around, and dont gimme that its 2 small rooms, cause if you can compensate for a bad room, you can rough in headphones and finalize on a variety of systems

I suppose that is why all major producers mix on headphones to start with and then check it on several different sets of crappy speakers to finalize. Come on dude all real mixing rooms have meticulously designed acoustic treatments, very expensive monitors and then are electronically voiced to further smooth out the room. The acoustics of a room and how the monitors work in that room, are the most important aspect of good mixing. I have mixed in rooms from L.A. to New York to the Bahamas and what makes a good mixing environment is the "sound" of a control room and how well it can be trusted to sound the same outside. True, you can limp by on less, but doing the best you can do - requires the best you can get. As I said, "IMHO". To each his own. But, I think that opinion is a bit uninformed. You always have to do the best you can with what you have, but don't discount the benefit of having better. However, to be honest, my opinion may be a bit colored by years of working in world class studios.
