The Gaunce Sound

Post by jonathanm » Wed Apr 16, 2008 4:16 am

As I've been hanging around here, one thing I've really come to admire is (1) the sound billg gets on his productions, and (2) the speed with which he seems to finish them.Bill, can you throw us a bone on:1. What your doing for drums?2. Are you playing all those instruments yourself?3. What mic/preamp are you using for vocals?4. How the heck are you cranking these things out so quickly? (clones, caffeine, staff of 150)?Thanks, man.Jonathan

Jonathan, I'm really flattered, honestly. If you're not yanking my chain, here goes . . . (if you are, well then I'm a dumb-ass & here goes anyway!)1. I use mostly loops from Discrete Drums & I have an old m-audio loop disc that has great vintage sounding drums that I use a lot.2. I have a couple of tracks that a friend palyed guitar solos on & Steve Gilbert from the forums has played keys on a few tracks (great playing too, thanks Steve!) but mostly it's all me.3. For main vocals I'm using a MXL V69m with a 20yr. old tube. If you swap out the cheap tube that comes stock in the V69 I think it's the best mic for the money. I use a Fathead ribbon mic sometimes for back-up vox & for guitar cabinet. I use a use a first generation (10 or 12 yr. old) Joe Meek VC6 for my main mic pre & compressor. It's not super quiet but has a very "analog" sound to me. I've heard the new Joe Meek stuff is not very good so I keep my fingers crossed that nothing happens to this one . . . I think I love it.4. I may work fast because I'm old as dirt & have been messing around in recording studios most of my life & also because most of the time what I do is one complete take, usually the first or second. not because I'm good but exactly the opposite. I'm not very good at any instrument & not a really precise vocalist. even if I do a zillion takes it never gets any better. Sometimes it gets worse. There ya have it Jonathan!
