slave computer

As some of you know, I'm a dyed in the wool Mac guy but I do use a PC for a slave for running samples from Kontakt.I'm considering adding another PC (glutton for punishment, I know ) and was wondering what folks' take on Vista is. Since it appears that you can't get a Windoze machine these days without it, just wondering how it's working with applications like Kontakt and East West Play. I'd probably run a VST host program like Bidule or the V-stack (which I have). I already have an M-audio FW410 that I can use, anyone having good luck with M-audio's Vista drivers?I'll probably get an off-the-shelf unit like an HP or something, probably 4 cores and at least 4 G RAM. Any recommendations? I don't need fancy graphics or sound but having an extra slot or two for hard drives is a plus. Don't need fancy cases or so on, I'm going to load up my sounds and then switch the monitor back to the Mac and happily compose away.How about 64 bit? Is that ready for prime time?I know there's some PC gurus out there that can shed some light on this for me.CheersMazz

been running kontakt, reaper, Ivory on vista 64 for a few days, have to say I'm pretty impressed with most things, runs fast, and no hangs.It still needs some time to get better though, but it's a way towards mac I think.

Good to know. I won't be doing any DAWing on this machine, just sample/VI playback, sounds like it might be OK. Anyone else with other info?

I'd definitely by a 64-bit machine, because a Kontakt with 64-bit memory access is due later this year. Especially for a slave machine, no way would I buy anything 32-bit. EW Play is already 64-bit.Everyone I've talked to recommends XP64 over Vista, but I don't have firsthand experience. What I do know is that it's not a good idea to buy off-the-shelf machines for this. You *can,* but the best things about PCs is that you can put together exactly what you need.If you don't want to pay for a specialist like VisionDAW - and I personally prefer to do that, because they really know what's going on and will keep you up and running - then go to a store like PC Club that puts together machines to your specs. They're not more expensive than HP or Dell.

Also, you might not need a host - Kontakt runs stand-alone.

Nick,Thanks for the replies. I intend on running Play and Kontakt stuff at the same time so I'll probably need a host.I'm going to look in to all my options on this before I jump. 64 bit for sure, maybe I can find a copy of XP 64, I've heard Vista is a pig with RAM, etc. but it's all rumors at this point.BTW: I just subscribed to VI mag and I'm reading it online and really enjoying it! I didn't realize you had a mockup series and that's proving to be very educational. Great work!Mazz

That's a great machine. Is building a computer out of the question for you? It seems it would be much more economical and you could get more power into your system. It takes some work, though, but is rewarding when your DAW is complete. I have no slave computer yet. My current DAW will become one when I build a new computer. daniel

I also don't want to buy something that has a bunch of bloated software nonsense that I'll never use that just strangles the performance of the machine. This baby would only be used to spew out samples as fast as possible over to my Mac DAW. I understand that it would be more economical financially to build my own machine but the hours spent doing that would be hours I wouldn't be writing or promoting. My time is worth something and I'd rather be making music than making a computer.At least that's how I feel today, I'm still debating this in my head.Thanks for the feedback,Mazz
