Production Mastering

Hi,I've been reading up on Mastering the final CD. It is obvious to me that this is a very special talent, and different from mixing and recording.My questions are:1. Has anyone used the Mastering from Disk Makers? -- For 14 tunes they charge around $600. 2. Should the people that are replicating the CD do the Mastering.3. Can anyone recommend other mastering studios, that are competitive priced. Thanks for your input!Bob

Hi Bob, I've used David Torrey & was happy and a producer/engineer friend of mine who's a LOT pickier & has a lot better ears than me uses him. He's kind of "old school".http://www.drtmastering.com/faq2.htmI've used a guy named Hans Dekline at Sound Bites Dog. He's mastered tracks for me with a couple hours turn-a-round for $50 a track. You can google him to check his creds. here's his link http://www.soundbitesdog.com/Bob, I might add that with the good mastering jobs I've had, depending on the tracks, sometimes there was a BIG difference & then sometimes I could hardly tell & wondered what the heck I spent my money on. Unless they've changed their policy recently, both of the above guys work with you until you're satisfied. Both also have pretty informative web sites.

I've used Collossal in Chicago and I was happy with the results, and they were easy to work with.I"ve also heard great things about Yes Master in Nashville

I use Matt Sandoski at Airshow mastering in Boulder CO. There whole philosophy is to bring world class mastering to the independent players. They're competitively priced and well worth it. They were the first real mastering house I used, as oppose to dropping in a local studio with a finlalizer and an L2 program, the difference was incredible, even my mom could hear it!(The difference that is, mastering is sort of like compression in that you don't want hear it) real houses are always way more subtle than the other guys in my experience. Good luck. I've never used discmakers for mastering, but I'm sure they do great work.

I have some friends that used Disc Makers and I didn't think it sounded that good. Albeit it was for a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal thing so maybe they do other styles better but for that kind of music they took all the 'edge' off. That was about 7 years ago too, maybe they're better now.
