Gold has many more articulations and has the release trails which are samples of the concert hall the instruments were recorded in. The release trails are what gives the library it's particular sound, typically good for bigger sounding things but the releases can be edited to give a smaller ensemble sound if that's what you are looking for. You wouldn't usually have to use a reverb on the sounds which can save processing power. It comes with Kontakt player but runs better inside of Kontakt is you have that.Other libraries such as Vienna are recorded much drier and may need reverb to achieve some of the same "hollywood" bigness that comes naturally with Gold. Some say this approach is more flexible. I prefer the release samples most of the time. The new Vienna library (the 500.00 one) uses it's own player.I recently purchased Kirk Hunter Diamond library and it seems to strike a balance between Gold and Vienna. The programming for the Kontakt version is very good and takes advantage of a lot of cool "under the hood" stuff that senses your playing and plays the appropriate articulation. I really like the playability of the instruments in the Kirk Hunter library. Some are dry, some have ambient versions like Gold. It requires Kontakt although there is a Giga version and also I believe Halion and EXS versions but I use Kontakt and apparently the programming is best utilized in that version.Of course there's others like MOTU and Miroslav and everyone has their own likes and dislikes. The proof is in the music and who's guiding the ship. Many of us on the forum use the EW libraries, Gold seems to be the most popular version, and so you could listen to some music that we have made to see the potential of the library once you get control of it.Now you have my opinions.Mazz
