What Digi Kit do you use to trigger drum software

Post by aimusic » Sun Dec 30, 2007 10:15 pm

Hey All,I'm currently trying to decide on what digi drum kit to purchase to trigger my sounds in BFD2.0, I can't stand programming drums or using a midi keyboard to trigger the sounds as A) you lose that rhythmic feeling of a drummer andB) you can't utilise all the drum parts effectively...So baring in mind that I'm on a budget and thinking along the lines of buying an Alesis Dm-5 Pro Kit to trigger BFD2.0, has anyone used the Alesis before and if so, how is it? Has the kit got dual triggers so if I play ghost notes, ghost notes will appear in my recording as opposed to just 1 velocity layer???Or what else do you recommend? PLEASE don't say ROLAND'S as they're outta my budget range at the moment....Thank you for your time and I hope that 08 brings you all tons of financial and spiritual success!Brad

to me, there are only 2 reasons to get an electronic set of pads...1) you already play drums quite well, and are missing the nuances that a real drummer's hands and thoughts can bring to your music, or2) you want to learn HOW to play drums better, or hitting things is FUNBecause if you aren't already a drummer (or can bring a good one in), a new set of electronic pads, is not likely going to make your drum patterns/grooves better. Just a different set of problems to edit...but of course, I'm not a drummer, and my perspective is that of a geeky keyboard player w glasses. Hey Steve,I do play drums that's why I feel sooooo limited by programming or playing via keyboard.... It sucks!! :c) Not that playing keyboard sucks, just trying to play drums via keyboard sucks, like trying to play keyboard via drums would suck... if that makes sense? IT'S TOO EARLY FOR ME :c)

There's other options like the m-audio trigger finger for finger drumming or the roland pad thingy that sits on a table or mic stand that you play with sticks. I think you can hook a kick drum pad up to that one.Another idea would be do put triggers on your acoustic drums. I don't know how well that works but they're out there. You'd need a trigger interface but I think Alesis still makes that DM5 or something like that that has the trigger inputs.I'm not a drummer but I prefer to find well played MIDI loops and combine them and then tweak the parts after that. That might be heresy to a drummer but it's worked out well and is pretty fast for me. Others take it as a badge of honor to program their own drum parts but I shamelessly admit to using loops. I've had drummers comment on my drum parts in a good way so something must be working.Good luck and have fun!!Mazz

I got a 10-pad DrumKat on eBay for $200. I actually used it for live performance, and not even drum parts, but I've been tempted to set it up in my tiny tiny living-room-corner studio just because it's so much more fun than playing drum parts by keyboard. And I must agree with Mazz that well-played loops can get you a long way. The last thing I did with a country drum part, I used 90% loops and played a couple variations in on the keyboard where needed.EDITED to append: And by the way, back when I first got my DrumKat, I found some DIY instructions for building a reasonable kick trigger to use with it. A quick Google search for it right now does not pan out, but keep that in mind if you do go this route.

Hi All,Thanks for the responses...Basically the set-up I'm going for isDigi Kit - Pc - BFD 2.0, and I'm not that resourceful to build anything, so just looking for a decent kit with articulation options so that I don't get the machine gun effect - 1 velocity per hit, even if I tap it gently....Hope 2008 has started on a good note!

I use a Roland Handsonic for triggering electronic percussion. I sometimes use the on-board sounds, but mostly triggering samples in Battery. While I like the drum samples, I find it can sound stiff, esecially for certain percussion. As such, I also mix in a live hi-hat, tambourine, other hand percussion and occassionally a real snare to catch the subtleties of those instruments and make the overall percussion sound alive. Terry
