anyone running a quadcore system?

Post by milfus » Mon Dec 24, 2007 5:01 am

its time to upgrade and I got money out of nowhere, so it's time to get a system that doesnt start bogging down on me half way through a project. I was thinking of just seriously overkilling the specs so I wont have to update for awhile, But i was wondering if anyone has checked out pro-tools on quadcore processors, the site itself hasnt done testing, but I am sure someones tried em out.

Haven't used Protools but........... I just built a computer with a Quad core/2.4Ghz Processor/4 Gigs Ram. I run Nuendo 3 and the thing is pretty damn fast. I've been using lots of samples from Eastwest (EWQLSO gold, RA, etc) and the computer is able to keep up pretty well. I don't think that there would be much of a difference running Protools, but again I have no experience with the program. Hopefully someone else can give you a little more info

The first thing to do would be to find out if Pro Tools even takes advantage of more than one or two processors. It wouldn't surprise me if they haven't programmed the software to do that yet. They are so incredibly slooooooowwwww in making Pro Tools compatible. Also, IF you are thinking Macintosh, I don't think Pro Tools will run in Leopard (10.5) yet, so that might also be a problem unless you can get a new quad core Mac with a downgraded operating system. Can't you also get Macs now with 4 dual core processors (total of 8 processors)? That would be cool.

This is their only quad core configuration. You can't get a Mac (at this time) with only one quad core chip. These machines are pricey. I got the 3.0 Ghz Dual Quad Core with the stock video card and it was well over 4 grand. The machine is so fast that the one screen that shows a progress bar of the OSX boot up process does not even appear now.I can't tell you anything about Pro Tools since I stopped using it because of the issues I had with Digi 's ongoing problem of drivers not being released fast enough and any system updates breaking their drivers. I have not missed PT but to each his own.

yeah its gonna be expensive, but even if it only worked at half speed, itd be an upgrade to what im using now, and when they did implement it, my power would just double, I use other DAW's as well, pro-tools is just my main stay (and the one I do all my dynamics and mastering in) so I was asking, the site isnt conclusive, buut even if it doesnt use all the cpu power, I'll still get it so when it comes around it will, just im in school, so if all the sudden I can use it, im pretty screwed

Yeah, but still . . . make sure to check on the operating system compatibility, as I mentioned above. I don't think you can get a new Mac these days that isn't running Leopard (10.5)

adk is building it, yeah its paid for, with shipping it hit me for like 3.6which believe it or not is pretty good, cause ive seen about the same system for 5.5but if you calculate that it can go toe to toe with an hd expanded system (up to about 6 confirmed, but rumors as high as 8 or 9) then you are actually saving a hell of a lot,if only some of those plugs would support le
