ROLAND SRX-06 vs. EWQSLO?

Post by paults » Thu Oct 25, 2007 12:43 pm

so many of you are using virtual instruments, I'm suspecting I may already know what you are going to tell me. I already have a Roland XV-5080 - would a ROLAND SRX-06 Orchestra expander sound as good as EWQSLO? Or, have you dumped your hardware synths because the sample library sounds so much better?

Considering the samples of that SRX-06 are actually many years old as it's really just a re-packaging of 4 of the old JV 1080 series expanders (albeit with some new programming)...I think that should give you a clue .Now consider that the SRX-06 board holds a total of 64MB of sample data, and only half of that is used for orchestral sounds (the old Orchestra 1 and 2 boards). Compare this to the East West Gold bundle, which devotes roughly 35GB to the orchestra.I think you've got your answer...

Excellent points! Judging from what I'm seeing on eBay, selling my XV5080 would buy me the virtual instruments, a Firewire drive, and some more RAM for my PC. Thanks!

Hey Paul, just wanted to point out that I think the 5080 ia great unit with tons of inspiring and very useable sounds in it. If I had one I'd probably have a hard time selling it...I tend to fall in love with at least a few sounds on every piece of equipment I own. It's just that when it comes to high-end "emulation-type" sounds, such as orchestral, but also grand piano, acoustic drums etc it can't compete with the top of the line virtual instruments on the market.Just wanted to clarify that.matto

Some of the Roland samples are pretty nice, but what matto says.

I'll throw in my 2 cents...On one hand, the old sound boxes may be short in the Gig dept, and the the virtual stuff can go as big as your hard drives can handle... It really depends on how you use what you got, not so much about what you got. Now in the case of playing a violin out of a casio vs a 5080 or EWQLSO, clearly no matter you do, you are not going to convince me thats a real violin. The 5080 may fool some people, and EWQLSO may fool a bit more, but the casio wont fool my 5 year old. If you still have use for the 5080 I guess hold onto it. I'm slowly shifting into this virtual thing. At one time had I had 18 sound modules! Now I'm down to 6, and only use 2 occasionally. I always get paranoid that my system will crash and I can't do any tracks. So I hold onto them... No reinstalling, no driver problems, no software conflicts, no running out of ram, no system lock ups, no authorizations!!! (they may be necessary, but can be a real pain sometimes ), no pops and clicks, and so on... Best of all when my current daw acts crazy. I just plug up my trusty modules and use my ASR-10 (Hey!It still works... ) to crank out a sequence if I have to.Happy Composing!! 77

The Garritan Strad would fool most people though...maybe not most musicians, but it's pretty impressive.

My ears aren't as good as alot of the guys here(they ring alot) but I've just rediscovered my JV1080 with dust all over it. I find alot of those sounds pretty inspiring. If you listen to my Christmas listing over on the forwards thread you'll hear mostly 1080 orchestral sounds, especially the flute and most of the strings. I've heard some sample library stuff (the old Logic string samples for example) that I find less useable. I'd hang on to it. Elser

Yeah, I've got EW Silver and MOTU Symphonic Instrument, but when it comes to French Horns and Oboe, you really can't beat the Roland 1080 stuff. Now if you're doing an orchestra only piece then you probably don't want to mix in the Roland sounds with the EW samples, but if you're doing a contemporary piece with a rhythm section and orchestra behind it, I always go with the 1080 for those two sounds. Go figure.
