Need a new DAW
Hi, ho Geo here, need a new DAW, hard drive crash on my Korg D1200 (I've had good luck in the past with Korgs but not this time) and I'm going shopping. Now I need something that:1. I can get a great (broadcast) sound out of,2. Is easy to use (not too tech savy),3. Stand alone (no memory on the PC)4. 16 tracks5. On board mastering/effects.6. Under $1000I was going with the Fostex 16, it seems to fit the bill, but maybe outdated? Any suggestions? Thanks for the help... Geo

Re: Need a new DAW
Geo, any chance you can replace the hard drive in the Korg?I don't know too much about these kinds of units but from what I know, there's a lot out there in your price range that will do what you need to do.Good luck,Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Yeah, I was going to replace it but it would be the second time in 6 months and my wife suggested an upgrade. I just saw a Tascam 24 track listed for $900, I off ... Geo

They're all hopelessly outdated. For $1000 you can buy a computer-based system that will eat any sub-$1000 DAW's lunch. Are you sure that's what you want?

I also need some portability, I travel out of state to record vocalist, plus I'm not very tech/computer savy. I was thinking of going with a basic Fostex 8 track unit (further discussions have placed some real-world pressure on the $1000 ) as a stop gap (I need to do some subs in the next two weeks) and explore a computer based for an up-grade in the near future. I MIDI so if I lay a time track in the computer and the portable unit I should be able to transfer tracks between, yes? I notice people mention Pro Tools, is that the best/most common? Thanks for any suggestions... Geo

Hey Geo, it's really not my nature to be a platform preacher, but I think you should really look at the latest Logic release with a MacBook. I don't think you can find better bang for the buck.

Hmm, I gave the wife a Macbook for Christmas......I take it I would need an interface for MIDI/Vocal recording? I'll check that out, Thanks.,.. Geo

Geo, get the Macbook and run Logic. with that new Apogee thingy. Yes, it'll be a steep learning curve, but everything in music is anyway. It's a leap of faith into how things are done nowadays. I really don't think you'll ever regret it.

Re: Need a new DAW
The problem is that you're now up to a $2000 rig. For <$1000 I'd probably build a rack mounted Windows machine and add a Digidesign MBox 2. The MBox comes with Pro Tools LE and lots of instrument and processing plug-ins. You may also be able to pick up a refurbished Mac Mini in the Special Deals section of the Apple Store, but in that price range I'm not sure a Mac is the right choice.(Just in case anyone thinks that's a religious comment, I should add that I've been working on Macs all day long for the past 21 years. I have several Windows machines too, but I use them as slaves.)

Re: Need a new DAW
OK talked to the wife (she's willing to give up the MAC) I'm going to the mac store tomorrow to check out the total commitment (enough memory, outboard gear needed) and plan "B" would be using the home PC as the studio (upgrade the memory and take out all the junk going with PRO TOOLS) so I'll keep you informed how the search goes....
