Quote:OK talked to the wife (she's willing to give up the MAC) I'm going to the mac store tomorrow to check out the total commitment (enough memory, outboard gear needed) and plan "B" would be using the home PC as the studio (upgrade the memory and take out all the junk going with PRO TOOLS) so I'll keep you informed how the search goes.... GeoI'm a Pro Tools guy -- and a Mac head. BUT, with Logic 8 coming in at $500 -- if I were putting together a home setup I'd go Logic at this point. It would be more money yes, but compared to what you get with PT LE and an MBox-- IMHO it would be well worth the expense and learning curve.Aub

I'm a Digital Performer guy but the new price of Logic really turned my head. For what you get it's a no brainer if you are building a new Mac system!!BTW, the M-Audio Firewire 410 is a very nice interface, IMO. You'll need an interface too.Mazz

Greetings Geo,Many on the net are saying Logic 8 is a no-brainer choice right now, considering everything Apple is offering at such an aggressive price. I agree with that; I'm getting ready to go Logic myself, after using Digital Performer for many years (note: DP is awesome; but there are some things about it I've never warmed to). If you're not familiar with the Logic Studio package, do go to Apple's site and look at what you're getting for the money.However... consider that you might also go with Logic Express 8, if you want to save $300 for whatever reason. Prior versions of LE were lacking much of the full version's oomph, but that's not true this time around. They really narrowed the gap; and it may suit your purposes for the time being. And, you can upgrade to the full Logic Studio at any time, and just pay the difference! Here are some very good resources that might help you and I both with that learning curve :http://logicprohelp.com/http://www.macp ... nge.comAnd of course, there's also Apple's own discussion group. Good Luck to you, and Happy Music Making!!!!!!!!!!!Rob

I agree...a MacBook running Logic will never be regretted. The learning curve is not bad, either. I jumped into it from a Roland VS-1680 and have been delighted.

I purchased Logic 8 upgrade and it rocks! Seems to sound better than 7 - thought it was me but other users have had the same opinion.8 is a lot easier to use than 7. Looks sharp and seems to be stable. Some third party plug in bugs that need to be resolved but plenty of out of the box plug ins that sound great!I run a Fireface 800 which I like. If you don't need a lot of stuff plugged in you might check out the Fireface 400. Apogee is more expensive but good AD/DA converters as well.Just a question - Is taking back your wife's MAC the tech. version of buying her a lawn mower or power tools for her birthday?javascript:add(%22%20;D%22)Christi

I use Logic every day and v.8 is a great upgrade; I use Pro Tools a lot too, but for different things. The reason I suggested PT LE is that Geo wants to spend less than $1000. You can't buy Logic and a powerful enough Mac to run it for close to that.I also didn't mention Cubase, Sonar, or DP for the same reason.

And the FireFace 400 is $1200 just for the interface. There are lots of great systems, but Geo wants to spend $1000. You just can't get a Mac and DAW software for that.

Hey guys, thanks again for the input. Christi I swear the Mac was for her, but never having used one before she hasn't warmed up to it and she expects a replacement this Christmas!! I swapped out my hard drive as a stop gap (listings due ) and should have the Logic 8 by the end of October. I'm sure I'll be looking for help around that time. TYhanks again... Geo
