Good Quality Samples

Hey everyone, Just wanted to know the names of some good quality string samples & how much you have to spend to get really real sounding stuff, I got forwarded for an orchestral piece, but they told me to get some beter samples. at the moment I am using edirol orchestral, exporting it out of the mix & importing it back again as a wav file & trying to tweek it to make it sound more realistic. Also wondering about drum samples? When you buy them, are they one shots or loops or both?Thanks,Sam.

Hi Sam,I have some East West products and I´ve never been disapponted to them. I don´t have their orchestral libraries though. You can check them out here: www.soundsonline.com EWQLSO bundles sounded good. Then the drum samples, it depends what kind of drums you´d need. If you´re looking for real sounding drum samples then the answer is DFH superior. I have it, I love it - JH

You'd have to really be doing some major orchestrations to where you really needed to go beyond this. Personally, I think it's the biggest bang for the dollar anywhere.Alternately, the Silver bundle has fewer articulations and no natural ambience but for $195 you'll be way ahead of your Edirol samples. You can always upgrade to Gold. That's what I did but in hindsight I should have just gone with Gold to start with because it's turned out to be the focus of most of my music.Happy hunting,Dave

Dave,I currently have Garritan Personal Composer. How would you say EWQL Gold compares to that? Because for a lot of the pads and basic string stuff, I think P.C. sounds pretty good if you play it right.Thoughts?

I don't think I'd ever recommend anyone to jettison GPO just to get Silver.GPO and the Gold bundle can't really be compared because they're at two different levels. Everything in Gold is chromatically sampled, there's natural ambience, and I can't tell you how many articulations but it's leaps and bounds beyond GPO and Silver. Actually it now has all the articulations in their top of the line Platinum package. There's 35GB of samples if that's any comparison to how many GB of samples are part of GPO.The demo tracks for Gold at the Soundsonline.com are definitely worth checking out.

I have Garritan Personal Orchestra and I've pretty much never used it. I prefer a bigger "Hollywood" sound and Garritan PO just sounds thin and wimpy to me. After I picked up the East West orchestra I've never looked back, it has the power and glory I'm looking for! I just recently added SAM orchestra brass and that's a very nice addition to East West. So far the solo French Horn is melting my butter (maybe I need to get a life?!? )As Dave said in his most recent report on his trip to TAXI, get the best quality samples you can afford because we're competing with the big boys. In instrumental music for film/TV, the composition can be magnificen but if the sound isn't top notch, it won't get forwarded. The clients don't want to "listen through" the production to see if the composition is good, they need to be able to drop the piece as is in to their show and they need to do it, like, yesterday!A quick watch of any top drama or crime/investigation show out now will give you an idea of the bar we need to reach, sound and composition-wise.Have fun!Mazz

what do you guys think about peter siedlaczek's "string essentials"..?they have good reviews, but I'm no expert in this field.cheers,martin

Thanks for your help guys, that clears things up a bit, now for the drum samples side of things, do the packs on the eastwest site come with loops or are they all just one hits?
