Re: Monitors
If I can make it as far as my brother's place, I might be able to stop by. I'll give you plenty of warning.I'm set up facing one of the long dimensions of my studio. This is solely for practical reasons and not for acoustical reasons. Because of this, I'm probably not getting a lot of reflections from the sides but I bet if I hung a cloud over my listening position, things would tighten up a lot. I also don't have any practical place to put a bass trap unless I did it where the ceiling meets the wall somewhere, which is a possibility. I've checked out RealTraps before but GIK looks really good and very reasonable. I might try a couple of their traps if I can mount them as I mentioned. What do you think?Take care,Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Monitors
Then your main issue will be the wall directly behind you, and the ceiling. Maybe a long bass trap in the wall-ceiling corner right above your speakers, then above you (well, depending on how big it is you really need it a little in front of your listening position to grab the reflection from the speakers) on the ceiling and the wall behind you. If you're gonna get 2'x4' panels, I'd probably get 6 to start with. Two across the corner above you, two between you and the speakers on the ceiling and two on the wall directly behind you. Get thick ones for the corner and the wall behind, but you don't need as thick on the ceiling. Take a picture and post it... that would help a lot.

Re: Monitors
I was wondering that myself.

Re: Monitors
Thanks to Dave's, uh, help I was able to post a couple of photos. This is the view looking toward the speakers. You can see the large painting that my wife painted years ago. That is the only treatment on that wall besides the bookcase. This is looking at the wall behind the listening position. Another painting and the piano, again no wall treatments.I heard back from GIK and I will be sending them a sketch of the room. They said it's totally feasible to mount the panels on the ceiling and the traps could go in just about any corner area, even where the walls meet the ceiling.Cool,Mazz

Re: Monitors
Thanks for all the info guys... I think I've mostly learned that I need to make sure my room is proper for recording first. I'm quite sure it isn't... bare, shiny walls, too empty, etc. Moving my monitors was an improvement but I'm not quite there yet...Some great info here, I really appreciate it!Dave

And for sure the back wall above the piano (though, all that stuff on that wall makes for good diffusion) and as many bass traps as you want to hang in the wall/ceiling corner. The more the merrier. And something on the ceiling too. Cool paintings! My wife is an artist too... shameless plug!As a side note... for others who might be thinking about foam. Foam is ok if it's the right kind. Not any foam will do. The problem most people run into with foam is that they line the walls with thin stuff taking away ALL the high frequency reflections. But NONE of the mid or low stuff. So mixes done it that room will be VERY bright and crispy with no bottom. You have to treat the whole frequency range, and usually you want to lean on getting the lows under control. Enough bass trapping will probably get you in the ballpark on the rest of the frequency range. And then you can just treat the little areas that are 1st reflection points in your room.
