Re: Higher End Studio Gear Can Make a Song
Quote:How about this: look at all the great performances recorded on 78's. back in the 20's. 30's and 40's. Great musicians and great playing but I can't listen to 30-seconds of one without throwing up! One of the great things about expanding technology is that it gets better and better for the ears. You think Good Vibrations could ever be made in the 50's?? It would've sounded like wounded crap. Early/mid sixties it all started. Up until then songs were songs, not pieces of audio art. But when the advanced sonics started happening things changed, for the better. Shit, Jimi Hendrix was a sonic pioneer...George Martin...gawd there's so many....Agree or disagree??Well I'm not sure if I agree or disagree or a little of both. If what you say is true, how do you explain the willingness of a huge portion of the population to be satisfied with the crappy sound of mp3s? Or AM radio? Or cassettes for that matter? A distorted boom box?On the other hand, the better the source material, the better it makes it through the mangling that it will receive before it makes it to somebody's iPod.A great performance is a great performance. Some recordings of great performances require more work to listen to depending on when they were recorded.A lot of over-compressed modern music is, for me, a lot of work to listen to more than once. The performances may be great but I'm totally drained after being pounded by a flatlined square wave song after song. I think this trend is slowly changing though, thank god. I agree. I disagree. imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Quote:Then I read Steve's reply mentioning Pink Floyd!Uh...that was me. Quote:I went over to myspace and couldn't even listen to it, squashed, no high's, mp3 at it's worst, which proves if it's not sounding A+, it's just another throw away song. It's a throw away song if the song is lame. Doesn't matter how good it sounds. A bad song is a bad song.Quote:And PREZ, the vocal(s) are very hip. To you they are hip. To me they are not. It's that subjective thing I was talking about.Quote:This song has a real beachy feel, no urban my friend.I listen to more than just urban (unlike many here who wouldn't condescend to listen to urban but want to talk about classic rock all day). You obviously didn't read my post.We just differ on this. I don't have a problem with that. I guess others have a problem with it because I'm not just falling in line with the, "Oh, this is a great song" crowd. Well....that's their problem.

I don't think there was one person who said this is a great song. Perhaps you could read the posts more instead of looking for a scrap. It is undeniably a great recording, of a mediocre song.

Re: Higher End Studio Gear Can Make a Song
Quote:Yo Prez, Check the top of the thread, the top notch bit isn't actually my post. AND Shak even says the song is average. Uh...whoops! My apologies. I don't know why I thought I was talking to Shak.Quote:Your opinion of the song is right on the money. It's not a stellar song. I grew up listening & digging the same stuff you did, how about that. Someone pinch me. I must be dreaming. Quote: I never advocate spending zillions on production or gear. I simply appreciate it.Oh..don't get me wrong. There are some things I'd like to get that is..well..high end. But I can do pretty much everything I want with what I got. It's a want not a need kind of thing. Quote:and wish I had access to it, all the time. We're actually totally in agreement, except that I just thought this piece of music sounded WONDERFUL, likely in part because of the facility. Of course you're correct that the production is almost entirely up to people. Just to clarify, I think it sounded good also. Real good. But the song is wack. Again, a good sounding recording does not make a good song.Quote:But I'm going to listen to it again because for me, music is the thing. Not songs. Paying attention to lyrics makes me analyse too much. Ooo. Here is where we diverge again my friend. Lyrics are paramount to me. Good music will draw me. Good lyrics will keep me.Quote:I don't use music for that. And I probably am unique in that way, compared to a lot of songwriters here. So we're different. I certainly don't think you're wrong to believe what you do. Your post simply caught my attention because I thought you might be missing out on enjoying the music. I'm feelin ya on that. I think we're pretty much in agreement on most things. I simply can't listen to a song if I don't like it. Period. Paragraph. I don't know of anyone who does except those in recording studios who have to endure terrible singing and awful songs from a paying client. I can't do that. Blessings.

Re: Higher End Studio Gear Can Make a Song
Quote:LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rush is psychadelic?[sic] LOL!!!!!!!!!!From Wikipedia --- Psychedelic music: "Esoteric lyrics often describing dreams, visions, or hallucinations; Longer songs and lengthy instrumental solos. A major feature of psychedelic music is its elaborate production, often using the latest multitrack tape recorders, and its heavy reliance on 'trippy' electronic effects such as distortion, reverb, and reversed, delayed and/or phased sounds."Sounds like Rush to me! Sorry if you feel like you're being ganged up upon, Prez, but your posts have the feeling of you being the ultimate authority on the subject.
