Sidechaining

Post by 53mph » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:20 pm

Ok, I've experimented with db compressor with real sidechaining. I've got the basic technique down...but is it actually worth using. From what I understand, dance music uses it alot as an effect trigger, TV uses it for speech over music, but is it used much in commercial rock, pop, country music?I read somewhere that sidechaining is a technique much talked about, but little used.Does anyone use it here?

It's a pretty standard technique, but in all honesty I can't think of the last time I used it.

Yeah, it's not something I use very often. Usually only use it with a gate - i.e. stick a gate on a track playing a pad and sidechain it to an audio track with drums playing so the drum track opens and closes the gate, essentially. Old trick, but sounds nice in some contexts.

I don't use it too often, but when I do it's usually to duck the hi-hat a little when it's playing on the same beat as the snare. And even in those cases, only when the frequencies are too close and I want some extra seperation without messing with the eq's.
