There are average listeners who give you the 'great stuff' BS. I have had people tell me that they NEVER listen to the lyrics! Then there are astute listeners who can catch just about everything and quote a favorite lyric back to you and buy your music. I listen to those. Fact is I try to listen to anyone who gives me money. One case, a person heard an unreleased song, told a friend who was shooting a commercial and we re-edited it and the song was accepted for the commercial prior to release.I have played with musicians who only play for musicians and consider the audience to be just seat fillers. Something is lacking in their soul. Also my business plan includes a broader base than just TAXI.

Words like "audience" and "seat" portray more of a concert image to me? I was under the impression we were talking about a pub or bar environment where nobody has payed in to see you specifically?I don't play live music for musicians, I play it for myself and for the edification of everyone listening. They enjoy hearing me play, and I enjoy playing, so I play. However, I would never change a song or tune because some guy from the audience didnt like it. If I like it, and a group of educated music professionals I know like it, then I would assume the guy in the audience doesn't know what he's talking about. Also, I don't really relate to this whole business of trying your songs out for an audience. I know what songs are good, I know when I'm writing them. That's like sumbitting for a custom critique and being astonished by the reply, that has never happened me. If you don't know whether or not your songs are good, then no audience in the world can help you.Colm.
